Post Firmware 4.1.112.33292 upgrade, issues with AFP or Samba when backing up from OS X

2015-08-19, 0:44 AM

First some background:

I backup my local Macintosh (and other networked Mac's) using Retrospect (version 10.5) to a folder on the NAS. I've been doing this for literally years using this solution, it's always worked. Last week I upgraded to firmware 4.1.112.33292 (from the May 2015 release, don't have that version number handy). Then two days later attempted another Retrospect backup, which after about 30+ minutes started giving me strange error messages like this over and over again:

    error -106 ( data overwrite attempt)/]/]

Additional error information for Disk Backup Set member "1-Mike [005]",
Can't write to file /Volumes/Backups/Retrospect/Mike [005]/1-Mike [005]/ABd.rdb, error -1023 ( already exists)
!Trouble writing: "1-Mike [005]" (75497472), error -106 ( data overwrite attempt)
!Trouble writing media:
"1-Mike [005]"
error -106 ( data overwrite attempt)

Additional error information for Disk Backup Set member "1-Mike [005]",

!Trouble writing media:

at this point, the backup is basically dead and has to be killed.

I've done the obivious things like reboot the NAS, deleted the entire folder structure on the NAS that I'm backing up to. I continue to get the same errors.

I can backup from my Windows 7 PC using Norton Ghost to the NAS post FW 4.1.112.33292 without issues. So it's something likely in the AFP protocol verses the Windows File Sharing. Which are the only two protocols I have enabled.

I don't find any errors logged on the NAS. I've looked in most files in /var/log (yes I have SSH enabled). So I enabled DETAILED LOGGING in the diagnostics.html page.

At this point another backup is running and hopefully I'll capture something in the logs when the error happens again. Who would want to review them (created via the CREATE A DUMP FILE)?

Thanks,

Mike

Hello mlenahan,

Retrospect hasn't been supported for quite some time but being a backup utility, there are many viable options out there.

0 person found this solution to be helpful.

This helped me too
