Problem mapping a windows drive to the StorCenter outside the LAN

2013-10-21, 1:02 AM

I can map a Windows 7 drive to a share by IP address with the syntax \\a.b.c.d\share

It works great as long as my PC is local. If I try to do this remotely it can't

find the share. In both cases I use the router IP address not the local one.

My router has port 445 as well as 13x mapped to the StorCenter.

I know the Windows request reaches the server because I snooped with Wireshark.

The sever responds with the text “Go away, we're not home”

I tried adding rules to the NAS of the share with no luck. I used my remote IP address

and * with the same results. I don't think my Win7 is using NAS but this is the only place

I could find where the StorCenter seemed to care about the remote IP.

What setting am I missing?

The personal cloud will work on 3.0 firmware and it should map the drives remotely. The personal cloud uses ports 50500-50599. .

Just so we are on the same page:

1. Create a personal cloud from the web interface

2. Connected succesfully to the cloud with all three green checkmarks or manually configured your router to forward to a port between 50500-50599 (should match whichever port you enter on the NAS web interface under personal cloud)

3. Connected to the personal cloud from the storage manager tab

First of all I would suggest to also map ports 20/21 to your NAS (as these are the FTP ports).

Then try from outside using ftp://<user-name>:<password>@<external-ip>/share

If this works, you might like to configure a dyndns service to your router or use the cloud functionality of your NAS.

Setting up a cloud 'your-cloud' in 4.x software results in 'your-cloud.mylenovoemc.com' representing your external IP-adress........

If this runs ok, you can easily add a network resource via explorer 'ftp://your-cloud.mylenovo.emc.com/share' and specify user/Psw to sign in

FTP works but does not solve my problem since I need to access files in place.

I don't think dynamic DNS will help because I can see the ports Windows tries to use and they are open.

The StorCenter seems to reject the first request and that's over port 445.

Iomegas managing software is able to map from outside to drive letter (is it this what you want?)

There also was some software e.g. Netdrive http://www.netdrive.net/ beeing able to perform that tasks. However (in my case) since ?time ( ?? 4.x version of Firmware) it has problems to establish an ftp-connection to Iomega NAS ( other sites are fine......)

Hi markwbc,

I would also recommend setting up a Personal Cloud as wolliballa has suggested. This would be the best and easiest way to access your device remotely. You can follow the instructions on the links below to set up the Personal Cloud and use Storage Manager or the Personal Cloud link to access the device.

Re: Problem mapping a windows drive to the StorCenter outside the LAN

I have two concerns.

1. If I go through the personal cload process will I be able to map the share to a windows drive?

I need to access a large database randomly and the doc I saw online implies a web browser

    interface.

2. The online information says you can not upgrade to V4 if you are below 3.3 and I have 3.2.6 now.

Am I able to go from 3.2.6 to 4?

If a drive letter mapping is mandatory you may give netdrive a chance or give lenovos storage manager a chance.

Mapping a ftp-network resource will do it, if you 'only' need explorer access....('open', 'save'....)

As far as I have seen the forum posts state that there is no migration from 3x to 4x as the hardware platform has changed.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions wolliballa. Storage Manager will map the drives as he said. If you have downloaded the new Storage Manager (LenovoEMC Storage Manager for Windows: Version 1.4.4.14439) you can use Storage Manager to connect to the Personal Cloud and it should map the shares automatically.

It is correct also correct that 3.2.6 cannot upgrade to 4.0 firmware.

Re: Problem mapping a windows drive to the StorCenter outside the LAN

Thanks for your help thus far.

I tried the Storage Manager and found it maps drives using the same Windows method I already tried (using port 445) and fails from a remote location.

I now know this is because most ISP's block port 445 to prevent Windows hacking.

It looks the the Personal Cloud solution only works on V4 and that is not an option for my V3 machine.  It that correct?
