Backing up Z500 Touch Hdd

2013-05-11, 3:29 AM

I have a one week old Z500 Touch. It is my aim to make a backup copy of all programs included in the purchase in case of unforeseen disaster later on. It seem easy to do so I thought while deciding on the purchase. To prepare I started reading Lenovo's forum to decide on how to go about it. After reading, I learned that it is quite different and difficult than what I thought it to be. The forum discussions about this topic is split into two thread, the old thread (Disk Partitioning and OneKey Recovery Feature) and the new thread (new disk partitioning and one key recover feature), due to the large number of responses from the community members.

Reading through the long thread I learned that:

1. The OKR function is the most difficult to replicate.

2. There is a hidden partition needed for the OKR function.

3. Resizing the partitions is not advisable. Erasing and rebuilding the partition will not work.

4. Four partitions have been reported by some using Windows Disk Management.

5. The OKR only recovers the system, recover back to factory or recover back to a period where backuped is made using the OKR. This will only work provided the hidden partition is left alone or intact.

6. Cloning has been claimed to sometimes work.

7. Disk copying also has been claimed sometime to work. Partition or Sector-by-sector copying?

What I have done:

1. I made a windows system image successfully to an external hdd. Restoration have not been verified.

2. I also made a system backup using OKR. The restoration function works using OKR.

3. I made partition backup of the six partitions (4 NTFS and 2 FAT32) using DiscWizard. Restoration have not been verified.

I'd like to seek help/comments/suggestions/feedback from members of the community whether restoration using Windows backup, cloning (Clonezilla is mentioned somewhere), Discwizard (Acronis if your disk is not Samsung or Seagate) or EaseUs diskcopy (mentioned several times) is successful and will not render the OKR function inoperative.

Thank you in advance.

Hi
Restoration using windows backup can be said as the best here since cloning has not worked for most of the members and users. Assuming you have windows 8, you can have a look at the various docments
http://support.lenovo.com/en_IN/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT076024
And some more options are given in this thread
https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-3000-and-Valueline/Recovery-Disk/td-p/931203
Hope this helps

Thank you Ishaan.

The first and second link you provided mentioned on the procedure of making and how to use the Recovery USB available in windows 8. A feedback given in second link made the claim that it does not work. I would assume that what it mean is that it will be able to restore the Windows OS but not the OKR funtionality.

BTW I forgot to include the info that I also made the Rescue disk which is needed to put back the system image I made using windows backup.

Also not mentioned earlier that Windows 8 provide two additional recovery option: Reset and Refresh. Again I have not tried these with the laptop to recover the OS and the OKR functionality. Any feedback/comments, etc. would be most welcome.

Re: Z500 Touch Hdd Replacement Guide with OKR 8.0 Functionality Revsion 2.1

hi this guide is great. I have one question though. Suppose I leave the capacity of C: at default value in the Bootable OKR 8.0 program (step A, point 7.a). If I have a HDD or SDD more than 100 GB, does this mean that the remaining space in the hard disk remains unused? can I then format it as a new partition volume?

Just came back from a short vacation. Here are the answers to your query:

1. Suppose I leave the capacity of C: at default value in the Bootable OKR 8.0 program (step A, point 7.a).
If I have a HDD or SDD more than 100 GB, does this mean that the remaining space in the hard disk remains unused?  can I then format it as a new partition volume?

Answer:

The OKR Partition creator program creates the partitions for the whole disk. Practically all space are created and allocated. The Lenovo (D:) is made variable from a minimum of 20 GB to maximum depending on the remaining space after the creation of the other partitions.

2. Is it possible for me to check if the bootable usb works before removing the original HDD? can I boot from usb even when the original C: is in place?

Answer:

You can test the bootable usb flash drive up to the portion shown in "Procedure 3E". Just don't put a tick mark and press the "Enter" Key to proceed  or else you will erase and repartiton the original hdd. Please exercise extra care when doing this to avoid accidentally erasing your original drive.

thank you very much,

first of all I have to say that yesterday I changed the HDD and now the Z500 WORKS PERFECTLY!!!!

I followed your guide, which is very clear and complete.

The only changes are that I used Rufus (http://rufus.akeo.ie/) to create the bootable USB because is very simple, and that I had to switch from UEFI to Legacy Support in the BIOS. I think this should be added to your guide.

So the bootable USB worked, and the Novo button also worked as I was able to restore the OS from a backup on an external HDD.

The only thing I did't try is using OKR to restore the Pc from its factory settings, something I'll eventually try, but I guess it should work.

thanks again! I wouldn't have succeed without the guide!
