Backlight Problems for Lenovo z500

2014-02-18, 21:21 PM

I was hoping somebody could help me. I was tryng to turn the brightness of my screen up using the F12 button. The screen suddenly dimmed to a minimum and won't get any brighter. I can just about make out the screen but I was wondering what I can do to rectify this, or whether it is just broken?

I have only had it since July 2013. if it is broken, what are my options?

hi kiddlestick,

Your first question.

If you should download and install the driver above?

This depeneds if your Intel driver just rolled back to a diff version or it is using a generic driver now

If:

The driver just rolled back     = Just let it be that's better

The driver went Generic go ahead and download the driver from the link and install

How to Determine:

Open Device Manager

           Open Display Adapter

Right click on your Intel HD graphics and select properties

now go to the Driver and check if the driver provider is Intel or Microsoft

download.jpg

If Intel, then that's ok no need to download any,

If Microsoft then download the driver from the link I gave because your HDMI/VGA display output will not work if you're on generic driver.

2nd Question

Try opening a Run Box

Hit Windows key + R and type in msconfig then hit enter

now go to services tab and place a check FIRST on hide all Microsoft services

now uncheck anything that you don't know, YEAH anything you don't know just leave the antivirus if you have one,

Now go to Start up TAB

click on open Task manager

Same thing here disable anything you suspect running the setup.exe thing.

Hope this helps

Cheers!

hi kiddlestick,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Can you try opening Device Manager and Look under Display Adapters,

Right Click on it and choose uninstall "Place a check on delete driver software for this device"

After Uninstalling Retart the system and Download this driver

Windows 7

Intel Video Driver for 32-bit Windows
Intel Video Driver for 64-bit Windows

Windows 8

Intel Video Driver for 32-bit Windows
Intel Video Driver for 64-bit Windows

Windows 8.1

Intel Video Driver for 32-bit Windows
Intel Video Driver for 64-bit Windows

then check the brightness settings

Hope this helps

Cheers!

Re: Backlight Problems for Lenovo z500

For the record -  this happened to me, and I am on a Linux system - so any windows specific hint such as "upgrading drivers" is foolish  -

This is obvious a BUG in the BIOS + firmware of this notebook servers, and a firmware upgrade could help it.

Upgrades at O.S. driver level are gibberish, since Lenovo does not maintain drivers for other OSes than Windows - and the driver used by Fedora and other Linux distributions is the Intel Graphics driver, which is opensource.

Now, once the defect hits you, what worked  to turn backlight back on for me was:
powering off, entering into the BIOS Settings (holding F2 during boot up) , fiddling around, saving and rebooting.

Please note that there is no backlight specifc setting in the BIOS - I think it is  the process of saving the parameters from the BIOS setting screens that "reset" the backlight to work.

Hello,

Go to your device manager and head to the "Display Adapters" secion.

Next click "Update Driver Software"

Then "Browse My Computer for Driver Software"

Then "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer"

Be sure that the "Show compatible hardware" box is checked

Choose "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter"

Click Next

Everything should be all great.

I found this fix online for myself at :   http://www.redmondpie.com/fix-windows-10-brightness-control-not-working-issue-heres-how-guide/

Hope this helps someone as much as it helped me!

Best,
