Big Mouse Cursor Bug

2010-06-15, 21:55 PM

Seriously getting to my wit's end with my Y560 - every so often (often enough that it's getting to be quite a nuisance) the mouse cursor suddenly gets really big and pixelated. I have replaced all the drivers with the latest ones from Lenovo's website, and have had no luck, the problem keeps happening. This problem does not occur in attached displays, only my main LCD, and switching resolutions gives a temporary fix, but after a while it inevitably happens again.

@pepemosca,

The link which you have provided is linking to an older driver?

The latest one should be: http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_2616.html

Re: Big Mouse Cursor Bug

I had it just now.

For the first time.

My solution was suspend the computer and turn it on again.

So strange... so strange.

Added:

It's an ATI issue:

http://sites.amd.com/us/underground/tips/Pages/catalyst-10-3-preview.aspx

The desktop mouse cursor issue (becoming enlarged at random when using Windows 7) has been fixed

But I don't know how to get a newer version of the ATI CCC.

I have this software version:

Versión del paquete de controladores	8.702.5-100505a-100064C-Lenovo
Proveedor	ATI Technologies Inc.
Versión de controlador 2D	8.01.01.1004
Ruta de archivo de controlador 2D	/REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0000
Versión de Direct3D	8.14.10.0728
Versión de OpenGL	6.14.10.9551
Versión de Catalyst™ Control Center	2010.0505.2241.38914

Re: Big Mouse Cursor Bug

OK, I have found that this issue is because of the ATI card.

Chech this out:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=big+mouse+pointer+ati

There are 1000 of post about this matter.

http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=264&threadid=135080&enterthread=y

What I found is that ATI made a hotfix:

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/ATICatalyst912Hotfix.aspx

But the file is so old that it doesn't exist anymore.

So, any ideas how to install a newer version of the ATI drivers?, I mean downloading from ATI:

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx

Also, here is a sample of the problem:

I had to take a picture with my camera, because the "PrintScreen" doesn't capture the big mouse... capture a regular nice mouse pointer.

Another thing, is that the pointer also change aspect... watch the third screen capture compared to the second.

And is not an Accesibility setting issue. Check the next screen shot:

Re: Big Mouse Cursor Bug

Good news.

If you install the driver on this package:

http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

You will get the driver version:

DriverVer=05/27/2010, 8.741.0.0000

Insted of:

DriverVer=05/05/2010, 8.702.5.0000

Which is the driver you get from:

http://consumersupport.lenovo.com/us/en/DriversDownloads/drivers_show_2616.html

And with that driver version the big mouse problem is gone.

But you cannot install the ATI Catalyst.

So, any ideas how to install the ATI Catalyst and get everything going?

I have the y460 and i dont have that problem. Is the problem only with the y560? or maybe im not using the ati graphics card much...

You would have to wait for lenovo to update it....

I just got my Y560 and I have this problem with the cursor. It's odd that the only ATI Catalyst Suite that can be installed is the Lenovo one. Even installing the mobility version from the AMD website fails to install the Catalyst Control Center.

I tried installing that driver update, but I still got the big cursor.

In my case, the issue only happend after I do a "suspend".

Also, I was not able to install the Catalyst... just the video driver.

Re: Big Mouse Cursor Bug

I had this same annoying bug. After a lot of search I read somewhere about a workaround; by enabling cursor trails in the pointer options. (I hate cursor trails myself so i turned it all the way down.)  I did that and have not have had the big cursor again after 3 sleep/hibernate. I also uninstalled the catalyst control center leaving the driver. I did both almost same time so I am not sure which worked for me. You can  uninstall only the catalyst control center  but choosing custom during process.

Hope this helps

Yes, you are right the "mouse trails" solves the problem.

But I hate it! :smileyhappy:

BTW, I only did the mouse trail... so the "only driver" instalation... is not the solution.
