Re: Big Mouse Cursor Bug

2010-07-24, 7:43 AM

I'm having the same problem with a giant cursor appearing from the middle of no where. I have no idea how to manually install a driver and the installation .exe does not work (the one ATI provided).

Could anyone write up a quick guide on what to download and install? I'm using the i7 y560.

Thank you very much.

I'll try to do my best, to get you a kind-of-tutorial.

Go to http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx

Download the "Option 1 - Full Software Suite"

You will download a 1 MB software and then... this 1MB software will download a 70 MB software.

You need the 70 MB.

Uninstall the ATI drivers that you have now: The ATI Catalyst and all that stuff.

The screen resolution will change to a lower one.

You can use UniExtract (http://legroom.net/scripts/download.php?file=uniextract161_noinst) to extract the content from the file: 10-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe

There, the .INF is here:

\10-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc\$[31]\Packages\Drivers\Display\W76A_INF

Start the "Device Manager", run this program "devmgmt.msc".

Go to video card, and get the "Properties".

When you are there... go to the Driver tab and click on "Update driver".

Make the "Driver update manager" to look inside the driver folder.

And that's it... It will install a driver called "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5700 Series".

Edit: Easier way to get the .INF.

Also, when I select to update driver, it says the best driver is already installed. :(

Btw, you have to first uninstall the already installed driver and ATI Catalyst to get this new driver work right.

Actually, there's no need to manually extract all the drivers using a program. When you run the programs provided by ATI, it should extract itself. At some point (I don't exactly remember when) it should ask you where you want to extracted to. The wording is a bit different in the installer, but you should recognize it. I believe the default path is C:\ATI\Support\10-6_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc. After that, go to your device manager (search it in the start menu), click on 'Display Adapters',  then click on the graphics card and then select Update Driver Software from the top toolbar (it's the third button from the right). Then, a new window should appear. In this one, select the second option to browse your computer for software. On the next window, select 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer' and then in the next window, click on the 'Have disk' button at the bottom. From there click browse, and select the .inf file that pepemosca described in his post above. The drivers should install.

Also, if you want to keep the Catalyst Control Center, you can try and install the new drivers without uninstalling the old ones, like I did. I have not had any problems with that yet, but if you're not confident with computers, I recommend uninstalling the old drivers like pepemosca recommended.

Good luck, and post back if you have more questions!

Pepe, a bit of help pls....

- when I run the initial 1Mb file it says not compatible and won't download the 70mb file?

- is it possible for you to put the 70mb file or extracted contents on rapidshare or some other similar service?

cheers

Are you downloading the 64 bit version on a Windows 64 bits?

Also, are you downloading the 70MB file from a Windows 7 computer?
