Charging pin and cable is heating up unnaturally- Y540

2020-06-18, 18:02 PM

I have a Lenovo Y540 and I've been using it for almost 10 months now with no problems. Recently I've been having trouble charging my laptop. The pin and port heats up for some reason. Did not happen up until a few days ago. It doesn't charge unless i plug it in at some angle, but the pin and the case becomes very hot

Hi Jaivarun,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I suggest that you refrain from using it and have it checked in a service center.

You may try testing it with another known good compatible charger to isolate but the service center can internally check if there are issue with the port connections or the board itself.

You should inform Tech support regarding this to prevent further damage and prevent safety risk.

I hope this helps answer your query.

Regards

No, I did not, I took it to 3 different service centers and each of them tells me a different story.

One said the dc charger was of the wrong wattage, the second said it's a motherboard defect, and the third one kept it for a month and said there was no problem, but I've now gone through 4 adapters, and each time the charger port heats up.

Oh man, I’ve been facing a similar issue and had gotten a new charger brick itself. It was working fine for a good month and I’m having the same issue again! I have the same Lenovo legion y540 laptop.

could it be a port problem itself? But when i got the new charger it didn’t heat up as much so that makes me think otherwise.

Please let me know if you find a solution

One thing bugs me that the current rating for this laptop is so high that the heating issues are inevitable.

Charging pin and cable is heating up unnaturally- Y540

I do not have a fix but I have a temporary workaround, so the issue occurs when the charger pin heats when the laptop is on load. what I've done is I've used throttlestop software to turn OFF the turbo boost on the CPU which keeps it on 4ghz continuously. Now my laptop runs everything on 2.58ghz (base clock) and the heating issue is gone/minimal. With this workaround, the only issue remains is the loose pin for which I hold the charger wire at an angle and keep it in the same position for the rest of the session. for a permanent solution, we need to change the charger port on the motherboard (desolder it and resolder a new one) as its the loose connection at the port that's causing the heating issue under heavy load/turbo boost.

I've gone through 5 adapters since i bought my laptop in august '19. The service centre is unable to identify the problem too and they finally replaced the motherboard after over a year of requesting.Been using the laptop with motherboard for about a week now, ill update if any further issue occurs.

Hi,

I would like to add to this discussion. Our company has multiple Legion laptops and we have recently found out that Y530 and Y540 experience this problems. With Y540 we tried buying new (100 USD) charger that fixed it for 6 months (bought 06/2020). Now at 02/2021 we see both Y530 and Y540 experiencing this problems. Throttling helped little bit but after few hours of usage charging port is extremely hot. I will take both laptops to official service center next week and ask them to replace motherboards.

I will update with more info after service.

I got the motherboard replaced about 6 weeks ago( early Jan '21) and I haven't had a problem yet, but it usually takes around 2 months or so.I will update later if there is any further issue.

The official service center believes it is due to the charger. They will give me a new one under warranty for chargers since I bought a new one 6 months ago. They told me that "Y series" never had problems with the charging port on MBO.

The cool thing about this charger is that price is around 150USD in Europe. So convenient.
