Constant Wifi connection dropping

2008-10-16, 8:55 AM

I just bought an IdeaPad y430 and it comes with Intel WifiLink 5100 card on board (internal) that constantly causes freezes in wifi connection. Once I'm connected, the connection last for about 30 seconds, and then some website load easily, some don't. I have to reconnect all the time just to enjoy that randomly-stable connection.

I'm sure that the problem is with wifi card itself, not Windows since I've got a space USB WiFi adapter and it works great whenever I try it on my IdeaPad y430. Is this a common problem with Intel WifiLink 5100 card? Has anyone else experienced this problem and what (if any) are the solutions?Ii would appreciate any help. Thank you in advance.

I STILL have the same issues after doing the following:

1. Exchanged the unit

2. Updated the Intel Wifi 5100 driver to 12.1.0.14 (dated 8/28/2008)

3. Uninstalling ReadyComm

There is something wrong with the wireless card and/or the driver.

Yea same model and same thing i got the laptop from circuit city  i have tried everything... even moded the settings of the driver, updated and rolled back, update intel chipset and everything. (iam a mcp)  it all leads to dropping connection iam connected to a G router so i speculate this could be it iam gonna try turning down the transmit and freq in the driver settings.

I scouted this laptop for the past week i do play eq2 it handles it with the gma 4500 in a medium setting 50fp in low. And of course i use several business applications....

this is perhaps the best purchase i ever made is the y430. love it!!!

but i think that the problem is related to either a bios update or the connectivity my partners hub! i remember i used wireless B with it and he had it set for something crazy and it was droping connection.

I will get back to u all later on this but i think its a bios issue.

You know what's funny? I just installed Ubuntu 8.10 beta and Intel WiFiLink 5100 card works flawlessly. No dropped connections so far, not even once. I'm just not quite sure what to think now. So, is Windows itself causing the problem? Hmmm... I guess it's all about drivers.

Well that's good to know Booblik.  I have an ideadpad coming (eventually)  and it's nice to know that if I have any problems it could very likely be a driver / os issue and not a hardware issue.   Keep us updated on your findings and hopefully it is just a driver issue.   Could save many people from sending a good machine back !

Mine started magically working - and I did a few additional things, but honestly cannot pinpoint to what fixed it (do try the things that I suggested above and also the following):

1. Ensure that you have a static WAN IP address (I had DHCP turned on the wired modem/router, which I still do, but the WAN IP is fixed)

2. Turn OFF U-PNP (Universal Plug and Play), on your modem. I did mine on the DLink DI-524.

3. I also turned OFF 802.11n (I don't have N router)

I am thinking that #2 fixed it.

I do concur with gp2008, Y430 is probably the best 14.1" deal - it is well built. It does not have bluetooth, I ended up getting a $20 Cirago BTA-3210 USB 2.0 Micro V2.0+EDR Bluetooth Dongle. Not sure if this unit has a bank/socket on its motherboard for an internal bluetooth card?

anonymouse99, there's a port for bluetooth inside, but you'll barely be able to find proper bluetooth.

Re: Constant Wifi connection dropping

Ok, I finally got it to work using mostly trial and error method. Here are my suggestions:

1) Go to "Previously Released Software" via this link Link (new window) and get an older (12.0.4.0, not 12.1.1.0) version of the driver. => Install dpinst32.exe first and then iProDifX.exe from the same folder.

2) Avoid installing Intel® PROSet/Wireless Network Connection Software (WiFi management program). If you have it installed, remove it. All you need is a device driver, Windows will do the rest via Wireless Zero Configuration tool

If all of that doesn't help, try disabling your Lenovo Energy management software (remove it from Autostart and reboot). Sometimes it forces a wifi card to reconnect freqently just to save some power juice.

Hope it helps.

I used to a similar wifi connection dropping issue with my ideapad.

Later I found out the problem had something to do with my DI-624+ dlink router.

After reading some discussion about the issue, I disabled all unused settings from the router configuration page, such as UPNP settings, Game Modes etc in my case, and then everyting is fine now.

Make sure you also try google search on  "[your route model] drop connection", it might give the answer. :smileyvery-happy:
