Extremely poor performance of Y570

2012-11-24, 21:50 PM

I bought i7 model Y570 about 11 months ago. I have been using it just for running a charting software with its editor for programming. I have been enduring the slow performance of the system, until I decided to get some help from the support center today. The reason I mention that this model has very poor performance is that, I compare the same application running on this model and another Lenovo G550 which is only a Core 2 Dual notebook, it  took less than 2 second to open up the editor on the G550, whereas it took alomst 10 seconds to open the same editor on Y570. Furthermore, I have loaded many more applications on the Core 2 Dual notebook such as email, google, etc. Here is my experience when I called the support centre (my case #8000504530) on Nov 24th,2012.

I was transferred 4 times, with one dropped call, a total of 3 hours on the phone with the support center in the Phillipines. I was told again and again that it is not a hardware problem, but a software problem, and to "help" me to optimize my system, they will have to charge me $90 for that ! I kept telling them that I am not asking for optimizing my system, I just want to have a basic i7 notebook that supposedly runs faster than a Core 2 Dual system. My guess is that the notebook may have pre-loaded with a lot of  unneccesary drivers or trial software that I don't need and don't want to have. Help me to remove all these preloaded drivers/software. What I got from them is 1000% frustration, and yet nothing was done. It was a total waste of time. The support staff was more eager to find fault in what I have done to the system, so that they can quickly and easily draw a line and say it is your problem, not ours. I am totally disgusted with their attitude, less to talk about wasting all my time.

I hope that if others also encounter similar problem with the performance of their system, please advise me what I can do to improve the perforamance of the system. At least, what I can remove from the pre-loaded system.

I am not sure if it is a competence issue with the support center in the Philllipines, it sure sends a clear message to stay away from Lenovo in the future, at least that is what I feel.

Hello and welcome,

Have you tried running task manager and monitoring CPU and memory usage?  There may be some rogue process using CPU cycles and slowing things down.

Just something to check if you haven't already.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did check the task manager and the resource monitor, all processes are running with low CPU usage, and there is no suspicious program. The only problem with Y570 is that it opens applications or launches editor extremely slow. That is the thing that puzzles me. Please advise if you know of any other areas that may have caused such problem. Thanks.

I believe most Y570's came with 5400RPM HDs. You say the only thing that is slow, is applications opening. This is due to the slow HD. Upgrade to a SSD and watch your wait times diminish significantly. It is possible that the older PC you are talking about has a 7200 RPM HD - therefor loads stuff faster.

Hi,

The Y570 has the HD called "WDC WD7500BPVT-24HXZT1 ATA", whereas my core 2 dual has HD called "WDC WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0 ATA". I am not sure what they are, but if you can telll from the descriptions, please advise if HD is the problem of poor performance of the Y570. If it is, then I might consider replacing it.

Can someone please advise why is my issue disappeared from the Forum? I could not find it under "IdeaPad Y,U,V,Z and P series Laptops" on 11-24-2012 at 4:50 pm. May I know the reason why my issue was removed? It is still an issue not resolved. Please advise. Thanks.

I'm out of ideas, unless it's a mis-behaving security program/antivirus.

Does it make any difference if you disable your security software temporarily?

Hopefully others will chime in with suggestions.

Hi,

The only security program I am using is Microsoft Security Essential. It is not the reason why the i7 is having a poor performance.

I have called Lenovo support, and before my warranty expires in a week's time, I have asked to send my notebook to repair center for checking. Do you think that it is worth doing that? I need to pay for one-way delivery charge. Please advise. Thanks.
