Re: Function keys on the z500

I got really disappointed with my z500 after I found out it's F-keys were switched. This was not a smart move on Lenovo's part having that as the default setting. The volume controls, refresh, etc are not things the average customer use all the time. In fact they're not even that necessary whereas the Function Keys are in fact necessary for some programs, games are also known to utilize these keys a lot.

I really hope they realease a BIOS update soon. I don't want to have to buy an external keyboard.

Hello community!

First, sorry for my poor english ;)

Second, I have found permanently working solution for switching FN keys functionality.

There is an app. Freeware app called KeyTweak. It uses 'Registry Hack' to swap keyboard input under entire OS (Windows).  Maybe there is linux version but i was not searching it.

Here is the link: http://www.programosy.pl/program,keytweak.html

After easy installation we got one window, with entire keyboard, and remaped keys currently in effect. At the bottom there are 2 buttons - Full Teach mode and Half Teach mode. Press 'Full Teach Mode '. Then we got small window with "Begin Teach Mode", and 2 scan codes. Press "Begin Teach Mode" then for example press F1 and then FN+F1 (remember to press FN first). We got 2 scan codes and we press Remap Key1 to Key 2. We just switched our first keys ;)  Then, You need to repeat the same operations but in reverse (Begin Teach Mode -> FN+F1 -> F1 -> Remap) to completly switch the functionality. After Apply pending changes and restart, F1 is F1 and mute is FN+F1.

Repeat for all the keys :) Cheers mates!

s_szczesny, were you able to re-map F4, F7 (this one is especially annoying, I hate entering the airplane mode which is cutting all my internet connections when I'm just trying to press F7), F9 and F10?

It seems to be working for the other Fn keys.

EDIT: wrote that before actually reading your message about the workaround. I hope there's one. F7 has the most awful Fn substitution.

Sorry for raising a hope. Other FN keys are too low lvl calls. They need to be swapped at hardware (HID) calls. I do not have such a knowledge. :|

Thanks anyway, it was a nice try.

Looks like we do need a BIOS patch from Lenovo. Dear Lenovo technicians, please help.

Re: Function keys on the z500

Just bought z500 and was very dissapointed! Some reviews of the model tell that fn's behaviour can be configured, but it's not. Moreover the topic is one year old and the problem still exists. Very sad.

There are a lot of people who not just playing games and multimedia, but use some file managers like NC, IDEs and etc. The programs have a lot of bindings for functional keys and pressing Fn button is very inconvenient.

Hope to see an appropriate BIOS update.
