How to reinstall Windows 8.1 on new IdeaPad Y510p

2013-12-05, 2:55 AM

Hi, I just got a new IdeaPad Y510p and I want to do a clean install of the OS because, well, it's what I do with every computer. There were no install disks in the box, and I'm not sure if there's anything in any of the partitions on the laptop. Is there a procedure I should be following to get the installation media and to reinstall the OS? I don't care for any of the bundled software. Can I use an ISO of Windows 8.1 and the key?

By the way, is it standard practice for Lenovo not to activate Windows on new machines? The laptop's Windows 8.1 is not activated out of the box, kind of interesting...

Dear Customer

Welcome in Lenovo forums

If you request such kind of OS so you will need to contact microsoft support to get both ( Copy if windows + Product key ) then you can install it on the machine

Please let me know if there is anything else required

Thanks

Alaa

So, just to be clear, you (Lenovo) are telling me that for me to get the installation media I have to contact Microsoft even though YOU are the OEM? That's beyond silly...

Why can't Lenovo provide me with the download link to an ISO image of the OS? Why isn't there one in the recovery partition? As far as the key goes, that's a walk in the park to get, so I'm not sure why you would even suggest asking Microsoft for it...

If I did contact Microsoft, they'd laugh in my face and tell me to work it out with Lenovo, so your advice is not very good.

@bulgarian388,

You can access the recovery partition by pressing on the button on the side of the laptop. The button looks like "back" button with a curve.

If you have deleted the recovery partition then you would need to contact Lenovo support to get a recovery disk for your laptop.

As for Windows activation, all Windows 8 keys are injected directly into the SBO thus there is no COA sticker. This applies to all manufacturer and not only Lenovo. Activation is done via online.

If you want a clean install rather than Lenovo preloaded Windows, you would be required to purchase a retail version of Windows 8.

Hope this helps.

Hi bulgarian388,

I have researched this topic in depth while searching for any clues on the y410p battery drain issue [which also affects the y510p so if you notice your battery draining when your laptop is turned off and it's you've already turned off the Intel Wireness N 2230 wake on wireless lan features, you are a part of a very large mystery on an otherwise lovely + powerful laptop] and have come across only 2 conclusions:

1 - get a copy of the windows 8 iso through dreamspark/msdnaa

2 - get a friend to give you their windows 8 [and maybe 8.1 iso] they obtained through the a retail outlet or the download centre trick

A third bonus option involves using the links to file hosting posted by people who have used the above 2 methods but be sure to check the md5 checksums before doing anything with the iso. Don't want any nasty surprises.

This isn't the answer anyone who asks this question wants but Microsoft has changed their distrobution policy for some reason so best of luck and don't forget that Linux and SteamOS are things too

Me too,

It's ridiculous that Lenovo does not provide a Windows OEM ISO. Haven't we paid already to Microsoft?

I have made a guide on how to make your own okr8 recovery media in a flash drive. Perhaps you would like to try to make one yourselves. The title of the post is "A DIY Project: Creating a bootable OKR 8 Recovery USB Flash Drive".

You can always try obtaining the iso using microsoft and your product key:
