IdeaPad Y560

2010-08-01, 4:38 AM

I can get the IdeaPad Y560 Laptop - 06462AU for $940 +tax, but I'm having a lot of trouble deciding whether I should buy the Y460 for $890 or the Y560 which has an i7-720qm and 7200rpm hard drive, better for the money. I am leaning towards the Y460 only because the Y560 seems to have a number of problems.

Any suggestions?

I don't know which Y460 you're talking about but I'll assume you're going for the best one (063346U)

Y460 vs Y560:

*RAM: 1066Mhz vs 1333Mhz

You won't feel any difference

*CPU: Core™ i5-520M vs Core™ i7-720QM

Cinebench score: 6645 vs 8870!

Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650  vs ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730

PCMark Vantage - Gaming Score: 4455 vs 6403!

The performance difference will be absolutely great. I have a 06462AU myself, just got it this week. I don't have any problems with it. Although I'm aware that a lot of people complained about issues (mostly screen).

In my opinion: this performace difference is worth the risk :smileyvery-happy:

Yea I meant the best Y460 config. The problems are exactly what worry me the most about buying the Y560.

How's the battery life on the Y560, it is more powerful and larger screen, so I assume it's less than the Y460 but all I can find out is that both of them get about 3.5hrs, like 3hrs with discrete graphics and 5hrs with integrated. Since you have the Y560 I'm looking at; it has switchable graphics? and how heavy is it? I want it to be fairly portable, the Y460 is rather light at 4.9lbs I believe.

I never measured the battery life. It's 5.9 lbs and it doesn't come with switchable graphics. If you care about portability, I'm sure 1 lbs would make a difference. The battery life would be definitely shorter with Y560, but I don't know if it would be noticable to your standards.

Since you care about portability, this might be an option for you:

Most important thing, this has 8 cell battery instead of 6. It's smaller: 14 inches. It should be much lighter. It has switchable graphics. And it maybe has RapidDrive(SSD+HDD).

I'm not that concerned about the weight. I thought the Y560 had switchable graphics so I'm not that interested in it anymore. I just wish that the Y460 I'm looking at had 7200rpm.

The Y560 models with i5s do have switchable graphics.   No i7 laptop from any manufacturer has switchable graphics, because the i7 does not have the integrated GPU core that the i5's do.
