Ideapad Y560 -- Catalyst update?

2010-07-21, 22:33 PM

So after several (fruitless) attempts at updating my graphics driver, it seems that my catalyst control center is stuck at version 8.7. Upon reading the specifics of version 10.4 (and above) it seems that "Switchable Graphics enabled notebooks using Intel chipsets." are not supported.

am I completely SOL here or am I missing something?

Is there a way to disable the switchable graphics to install the update correctly? (I don't use the feature anyways.)

any help is appreciated.

Does the Y560 have switchable graphics in it? I didn't think that it did? And where is the switch for it? Is it a manual switch on the chasis of the actual laptop?

The i7 Y560's don't have switchable graphics because the i7s don't have the integrated GPU.  Y560s with i5s DO have switchable graphics, and yes, there is a physical switch, next to the wifi switch.

Neither ATI nor Nvidia support switchable graphics in their generic driver releases (yet).  The drivers have to be tailored to the specific system.  You're stuck with the old drivers until Lenovo deceids to get with ATI to release new ones, which will probably never happen unless some kind of critical error is found.  Lenovo won't pay ATI for new custom drivers just to improve performance in games or add new features.

Maybe I'm wrong... But I think that the Y560 in some countries came with switchable graphics card.

Read this post from Cleo_Lenovo:

Machine Type 0646 with model mentioned below here have switchable graphics: 22U, 23U, 26U, 27U, 28U.

Also check this picture:

You can see in the front of this Y560 the switch for the WiFi card and the switch for the video card.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess as it seems I'm just outta luck for the moment. Ah well.

I tried installing some (supposidly) leaked 10.7 catalyst alpha driver (which, by the by claimed to support switchable graphics), but that was to no avail. I guess all I can do is wait.

Edit: and just for anyone's refernce, the highlighted key in the above picture actually isn't the gpu switch. (for me at least). It's a very small silver switch located directly left of the wifi switch on the front.

Hahaha, off course that highlighted key is not the graphics card switcher.

Thats the Recovery Key. But in that picture you can notice the switch key on the front... where you describe it.
