Re: Ideapad Z580 stuck on Boot Menu after BIOS update attempt

2014-12-16, 16:05 PM

What was the oringial/ previous OS installed on the machine? Windows 7 or Windows 8?

The blue screen should have more detailed information about the issue that is causing the bad restart.

If the original install/ previous OS was Windows 8, the above steps about changing the OS type to LEGACY, do no apply to you. You need to use UEFI for the OS type.

Re: Ideapad Z580 stuck on Boot Menu after BIOS update attempt

Were you able to find a solution?

I am also having similar issues. I have an Ideapad Z580 on Windows 7 SP1 64 bit and tried updating the BIOS, but it gets stuck on the boot menu

  1. I attemped to change the BIOS to default
  2. Tried changing UEFI to Legacy, which led to a screen that says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." I launched Startup Repair, which was not able to fix the issue.
  3. I tried to restore the laptop to factory settings.
  4. Called tech support which had me change the settings to default and restore to factory settings. When neither worked, he asked that I send the laptop to them or go to a local repair technician.

Re: Ideapad Z580 stuck on Boot Menu after BIOS update attempt

2015-01-25, 1:31 AM

Greetings,

I (today) updated the BIOS for my computer as well. I tried running 5fcn95ww_public 64bit.exe first, but for some reason WinFlash64.exe would crash constantly everytime I tried with exit error code 255, but I was able to run 5fcn95ww_private 64bit.exe just fine.

The flashing completed perfectly well, but I was not able to boot to my OS after an ACCESS DENIED error came up due to Secure Boot being enabled. Therefore, it would instead take me to the boot menu.

If something similar is happening to you, the solution that worked me was...

I, luckily, had a Windows 8 installation disk handy, so I was able to boot to it and access the Repair options available.

Repair Your Computer

Troubleshoot

Advanced Options

Command Prompt

In my experience with automatic repair tools, a lot of times it doesn't work. I figured it would be a good time to fix my MBR and rebuild my BCD, so I did in command prompt...

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
bootrec /scanos
bootrec /rebuildbcd

**Note** Perhaps what I did to fix my issue was unnecessary, as simply going to the BIOS settings and disabling secure boot would have sufficed. The Secure Boot option is found under the Security tab, but it will appear greyed out if its the first time you access the BIOS settings. To access that option, you first need to set an Administrator password and afterwards you should be able to disable it. Now, I jumped straight ahead into rebuilding my BCD and fixing my MBR which fixed the issue for me, so I cannot guarantee this will work, but it should. Also, make sure you have AHCI selected in Controller Mode and not Compatible.

Best,

omg thank you that finally worked, but strangely booted up a couple drivers not working, hat to remove and reinstall them.

What the hell happened? why would an official file from the official website do this? WIll there be any lasting damage to my laptop? I realise the BIOS update proscess is very important and worry that this wierd interuption might have damaged something.

it does not work if bios menu does not have the legacy option to click on to, as is the case with mine.

in boot menu, go to setup and bios settings will open, in 2nd or 3rd tab there would be an option for booting set it as LEGACY instead of UEFI, your pc should start normally now..

I have same problem.  I updated from Win 8 to Win 10.  Somehow, Win 10 changed the UEFI settings in my BIOS and the BIOS is now not accessible.  I called Lenovo and they said it's Microsoft's problem.  I called Microsoft and they said it's Lenovo's problem.  I'm disgusted at both of them.

BTW, I've tried NOVO, F2, F1, F12, Insert and several other combinations.  None let's me access the BIOS.  I'm hoping there's a jumper setting or something that can fix my computer.  Apparently nothing on the keyboard will work.
