Ideapad z500 brightness can't increase

2014-02-18, 17:42 PM

I have a z500. I updated from win8 to win8.1. But I cant seem to increase the brightness.. It is interesting because the other hot keys work correctly. I've even upped the brightness in the Control Panel, but nothing seems to work.

I pressed the f12 key once, while not holding fn (the key thats supposed to increase brightness). The brightness was instantly turned to minimum and I cant turn it up again. The f11 key for brightness decrease seems to do nothing.

I would really like a solution to this problem fast since its really hard to see anything on the screen with the brightness turned all the way down.

I  tried to increase brightness with and without Lenovo Energy Management in Win8.1 and in BIOS, but  nothing changed.  :smileyfrustrated:

hi fadhil,

Sorry to hear what happened,

Open Device Manager and open the Display Adapter category.

  > Right click on your Intel HD Graphics and choose Update Driver,

           >Select Browse My Computer

                 >Then Select Let me pick from a list of device driver

You will have a list of drivers try selecting one and apply it then try adjusting the brightness

If it did not work Try the Update driver again and select another driver from the list and check.

Hope this helps

Cheers!

hi fadhil,

Can you try opening the Control Panel and under Power Options Check the Brightness settings if the brightness adjustment there will change your Screen brightness.

Can you also try this one

Re: Ideapad z500 brightness can't increase

This occurred on a z500 we purchased for a company project, and a quick look around this forum suggests this is a common fault with these models observed a great many times over a long period - I would expect the issue to be resolved by now as it's clearly a hardware compatibility problem. Initially, the user simply pressed the f12 key (expecting the function use, not even attempting to change the brightness) and the display instantly dropped to an extremely low brightness. Reinstalling the drivers at first appeared to address the issue but we soon realised the backlight level to be fixed at the highest setting.

Whilst I'm sure putting the recommended drivers from Lenovo on will remedy the situation for now, I have little interest in repeatedly installing drivers to fix this as we use windows updates and the problem will certainly return. Is there any firmware fix in the pipeline for this? If not I'll be returning it as faulty.

Can you try clicking the "restore to default settings for this plan" under your power option plan? See if you now have a high screen brightness which you can adjust.

Thank you very much.I went back and installed an older (2012) version of the Intel Display Driver and it has restored the brightness and controls.

I have Windows 10 on the Z500 and after trying all the solutions to no avail, I just changed the driver to the Windows Basic Driver and hey-presto it works fine now!
