Re: LENOVO Y500 BATTERY NOT CHARGING AFTER USING LENOVO'S BATTERY GAUGE CALIBRATION

2014-04-19, 17:21 PM

I can also confirm stagger's find works. I also found another temporary solution that works really well. I purchased a 3rd party charger to see if this could fix the issue. It did not, but I noticed with this charger I could charge my laptop by going into sleep mode whether or not my battery was fully charged. Also I never have to disconnect the charger from the outlet to reset it.

Just to confirm here is what happens.

Disconnect Charger

Reconnect Charger(not charging)

Sleep Mode(Starts charging, sometimes it takes a few secs)

After wake charging displays in Windows

Make sure to wait until the charger led indicator turns on before waking.

I know third party chargers have their own issues, but it worked for me. I can't guarantee this will work for you, but if it does it is a cheaper alternative to oow mobo replacement.

The charger I used was by pwr+ on amazon. They have a 90w for y500 and 120w for the y580. Make sure you choose the correct one since both are under the same listing. Both are around $24 with shipping at the time of this post.

thank you for sharing erict7862 this is very interesting, and helps alot.

the orginal charger cuts power once you connect and disconnect from the laptop, and the aftermarket does not seem to cut power if you disconnect. it raises the question of the voltage protection or something as the original charger tries to protect you pc.

this is a good solution and will save alot of money, but keep an eye on your laptop after trying it a few times so there is no risk to fry to motherboard completely since there is a reason why the original charger cuts power. but it might be a glitch.

Did Lenovo replace your motherboard with the same (flawed) motherboard, or a different one?

Should I send mine in to replace? I didn't run LEM battery recalibration; wondering if I should in case of future problems. My warranty runs out soon.

you should send it for replacement if your having the same issue, and then uninstall the whole battery calibration program to prevent this from happening in the future, since it seem to trigger some type of a hardware issue in charging. do that before your warrenty run out!

i'm not currently having that issue, though i did experience some charging problems in the past which seems to have gone away. I've disabled LEM.

Should I run the battery recalibration to see if it triggers the problem so i can send it in before the warranty runs out?

no don`t run it!!, I think it`s a design issue so even if you get a motherboard replacement ur likely to have the same issue if you run the battery callibration program, so the best thing to do is to renew your warrenty and and keep using your laptop or sell it if it bothers you too much. I really love my y500, and I rarely think about this issue but in the future I don`t I will get a lenovo product for their lack of quality control.

Re: LENOVO Y500 BATTERY NOT CHARGING AFTER USING LENOVO'S BATTERY GAUGE CALIBRATION

just as an update I have replaced my motherboard with my old one because the power issue would couse the laptop to stopped accepting external power from the outlet under extensive load like in heavy games on sli so I had no choice but to pull the trigger and replace the motherboard with the original one ( the one that has a sound issue from the connector) I did that and thankfully I was able to fix the sound problem as well so my machine is perfectly normal again!!!

I am able to connect and disconnect the charger with no issues what so ever. anyone who is experiencing this issue should replace the motherboard this is the only solution and never use the batter calibration again. if your out of warrently lenovo should replace the motherboard for around 200$ if you can afford it of course, they won`t do it for free. I got lucky cuz I had to replace the motherboard cuz of the sound issue on my own cost so I got to keep the original motherboard which is the one now functioning in my laptop.

I Know this won`t help anyone but everyone should know that you should just replace the motherboard or if you are using your computer as a desktop replacement just remove the battery all together.

Hi guys!

Just wondering if there's any fix to this issue, besides having to send it in?

I have tried everything software wise, but nothing worked, the problem is with chip on the motherboard that is soldered in, the only way to fix the problem is to replace it, which needs a very professional soldering work, my warrenty is expired so I replaced my motherboard by my self, and the problem is fixed, so if your still under warrenty you should go ahead and send it to the service.
