Laptop only recognizes charger when battery is dead

2017-07-25, 12:54 PM

Like the title says, my Y510p of roughly 3 years has recently started doing this. Even if there is 1% battery it won't charge. It only charges when the battery is completely dead. I'm at a loss.

Hi thaabietv

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Would you reach charging the battery 100 % and how long does it usually take using the battery?

Knowing that the battery is a consumable part (battery elements depletes with usage and time), initially, we may question the battery life integrity.

WIth a drained battery may be lower than 20 %, start with unplugging the charger and to remove the battery.

Press and hold down the power button for 12 seconds to elicit power drain.

If the battery is still warm, cooling it to room temperature can be done first before placing it back.

Taking note of the battery indicator (item 2 page 29-30 of the hardware manual here), from blinking amber (battery charge less =< 20%) should progress to a solid white after 2-3 hours of having it connected to the charger without turning on the laptop.

Above process would be similar doing the power check out guide (pages 21-22 of the HMM here) where you may check also the integrity of the charger and battery likewise the operational charging.

From isolating the hardware from then we can move forward on the software affectation.

To create a battery report, press Windows Key + X and choose Command Prompt.

Type powercfg /batteryreport  andtake note on the location of the created file.

Update us how it goes.
