Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

2013-04-26, 20:40 PM

I ordered brand new Y500 Notepad from Lenovo website.     It was shipped and received just last week.  Keyboard and Touchpad were both problematic.  Went about returning it.

Questions:

1.  Do all of the Y500 Notepads have this issue.  Is there a possibility, that the next laptop, if ordered will be problem free ?

2.  If we buy the At-Home-Repair Warranty along with brand new laptop,  will they come to our house and fix the issue.

3.  Would it be possible to request Win-8-Pro installed for the same model ?

@usraek - I'm in the U.K so need to order from Amazon U.K as rather ridiculously, the Y500 on the Lenovo site, is £50 more than Amazon and only has a 720p screen as opposed to 1080p with Amazon.

Not to mention the fact that we still only get offered the GT650M version and it costs a fair but more than in the states.

Its fair to say, that Lenovo really don't have their act together at all over here in Europe.

I ordered mine from Lenovo and it was unusable from the box. I have since bought the new model and have no issues with it,

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

Sorry I have been really busy at work and unable to get this done. This is not going to be the best DIY yourself post but I wanted to get something up here for you guys until I am able to start working a good one. Once I have that I will be posting a link to it.

Before I start I have seen Y500's come out of the box new and still have this issue. No matter what the manufacture date. It looks like the solution from Lenovo is some small foam blocks that sit on each side of the track pad so it doesn't come into contact with the MB. I have worked on about 60 or so of these in the last week refurbs and new alike and it is just random on what ones have the "fix" and what ones do not.

LenovoY500 track pad fix.

Remove battery

Remove 9 back screws

Remove back cover

Remove CD drive/video card (depending on what model you have)

Remove 10 screws holding on palm rest (my arrows might be a bit off after looking at this picture a bit better but there are 10 screws total)

Remove SD card place holder

Remove keyboard (3 pictures on how to do that)

Remove three connections

Remove silver bracket (two black screw hold it in)

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p104/Bayet56/Lenovo%20Y500%20fix/Picture10_zpsfd8dcb84.jpg

Add electrical tape to cover bottom side of track pad

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p104/Bayet56/Lenovo%20Y500%20fix/IMG_20130422_091257_423_zpse6f47eba.jpg

Replace silver bracket. make sure screws are not to tight. The mouse pad has to make a clicking sound (after you do this turn over the palm rest and make sure the mouse buttons click if the don't loosen the screws a bit)

Re attach the palm rest

Really appreciate your work posting that strip down and fix. Bit disappointed it is quite as involved as that, as it obviously puts me off doing it to a new machine if I buy one. I'm capable of doing it, but don't want to void the warranty. So frustrating that this issue exists, I am so close to ordering, but a faulty machine would have me losing all confidence in the machine and the company

I would love to tell you to order from my place of business but I have already seen I am not allowed to post the name here. As it is an issue and we are licensed to sell upgrade/repair new laptops and we also have no idea what ones do or do not have the issue. We make sure before we ship them that they are in perfect working order.. Again I am hoping to have a more polished one click link up by the end of the week for this fix to make it a bit easier to follow.

What'sextra annoying is, despite this thread being over a hundred pages long, and also plenty of people over at other forums complaining about this fault - when I called Lenovo to ask them some questions about this machine, I asked about the touchpad issues and was told "errrr, I think I know what you mean. I think we had a couple of machines come back but it's certainly not a common issue".

 Yeah right!!

Hi ghibilmoon,

Thanks for your sharing and glad it works for you.

Nevertheless, I will not suggest users to do that as do not wish anyone of you lose your warranty for anything happens due to this suggested change. Therefore, try at own risk.

Still, we recommend our customers to get the touchpad replaced at the service centre nearby you which I will say it's safer to do so.

Thanks anyway.

Best regards,
Cleo

I wanted to reply to this. Shouldn't Lenovo have recalled any machines that were manufactured during the dates where this track pad problem was present?

It is all well and good saying you can send the laptop in to be fixed. But speaking for myself, the last thing I want to do when I spend nearly £800 on a laptop, is to have it sent away to be taken to bits by someone. I want it to be brand new and untouched. Not have the risk of it coming back to me scratched etc, as seems to have happened to people sending them for repair.

I am really Interested to buy this laptop, but Touchpad issue holding me back. It is not understood why Lenovo is not providing concrete solution for this issue. Has anyone buy it recently? pls confirm if problem still exists or Solved.
