Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

2013-05-01, 12:09 PM

I just bought a refurbished y500 from Lenovo Outlet, it arrived yesterday, I took it out of the box, and !!, touchpad doesn't work. Unusable! It works for about an hour after power cycling, then fails again. What a drag. I don't understand why these laptops with a known defect are being sold. I am dreading all the calls to support and mailing it back, etc. The bargain was too good to be true-- I assumed refurbished mean it had been inspected and works.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

Hello everyone.
I was planning on buying the Ideapad Y500 model next month, probably sometime around 15th June 2013.
It has all the features I need and the price is also good, anything similar from other manufacturers seem to cost quite a bit more actually.
Then, I happened to come upon this forum topic.
Having devoted the better part of 2 hours reading through most of the pages, I can see that there seems to be a severe issue with the touchpad of the Y500, and a slight problem with the keyboard.
What I wanted to ask is that, apparently Lenovo has said that the newer models are not having the problem, due to coming with the Synaptec touchpad, and not the ELAN one. Yet many people here have complaiend about recieving the old laptop manufacture model, even having ordered it in February or March.
This problem seems to be a potential deal-breaker. So, my question is, should I take the risk and buy the laptop, hoping I get the good model, or put off buying this model altogether.
Note: I am not a heavy user of the touchpad, I prefer a wireless mouse. I am currently using a HP laptop, that's way weaker in specifications compared to the Y500, but has run flawlessly for the past year, no problems whatsoever.
If not, can anyone pm me abot a model from another manufacturer close enough to this model?
I live in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Thanks :)

Ordered a refurb y500 w/650 and received a few hours ago and got the dreaded touchpad issue.  Plugged in mouse and it wobbled about 1/2" each direction.  Called Lenovo and I let tech connect in and updated driver.  It's been a couple hours but so far no issue as of it.  It is the Elan touchpad that I received and ordered it from Lenovo's outlet.  Tech was okay but a bit "green" and I called during normal work hours.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

Me too, and I am sending mine back. Here's what happened to me--

Ordered y500 mid april, received end of april, not working out of the box, touchpad problems.

Called Lenovo post sales center and agreed to get a replacement. Support person emailed me ups return labels, said I could return defective one after receiving new one.

Never received email confirmation about replacement. Emailed the post-sales rep who said replacement was already processed. Waited 3 days, no email or other contact, so called post sales again and was told replacement was canceled. How come nobody told me?

Replacement was probably canceled because there were no more identical machines available at the outlet. Post sales rep (a new one this time) offered to look for another similar laptop. I was not interested in a similar one, only wanted same specs with a working touchpad.

I asked this rep about other options, and got escalated to a supervisor. Supervisor said I could get a 5% concession (partial refund). Not enough to me, so he quickly offered a 7% concession, then a 10% concession, which I accepted. He said he would process the concession. "I'll take care of it today." Waited 3 days, nothing by email or in bank account. So I called again and found out concession was not processed, a record of the request is documented on my ticket, but no approval.

So I asked for 15%, they said no 15% concessions allowed. So I am going to return the laptop. :( Too much trouble.

I found out they just moved the post sales center back to US and are having lots of problems, so they have extended the return time to any time in the month of May (beyond the 21 day full refund period they usually have).

Such a mess, now I will start over to find a good laptop. Am at peace with sending this one back, just too many problems, unbelievable amount of time on the phone with no progress.

I would like to report that applying electric isolated tape on the back of the trackpad as instructed by user bayet, successfully eliminated the trackpad issue for me, I have been using the laptop for several days with no issues what so ever. I would like thank user bayet and the other gentle man who intiality prosposed this idea in the previous pages of ths forum.

Is the new driver working okay? I've installed driver version 11.4.8.1 and haven't had the issue till now. Just wanna be double sure if the new driver fixes it or if it will reappear.

If i were to order one of these that are on sale would there still be a chance of having this issue? This is my deal breaker right now as everything else seems quite awesome!

I cannot believe this issue is still going on. I bought a Lenovo Y500 (fully loaded) as a Christmas gift to myself last year. I couldn't deal with the issues and returned it after about 3 weeks. Now, I randomly return to this board, and find people still talking about the problem. Wow!
