Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

2012-12-23, 22:48 PM

Folks, I just wanted to let you know that the problem also exists on their new "flagship" Ultrabook U510. It seems to be a hardware issue - drivers won't flake out after 3 hours, but heat will build up and start affecting things. I haven't delved into the service manuals for anything other than the U510, but I'll bet the same chassis is used for all the 500 series Ideapads, as well as the same trackpad.

It's forecasted to be in the 40's (°F, 5-10°C) next Wednesday, so I'll sit outside on the back porch and see if it acts up then. If it is, it is indeed a design flaw within the chassis, and Lenovo needs to step up to the plate and provide us all with trackpads that aren't as susceptible to the heat within the chassis, or replace our systems with full blown Thinkpads that don't have this problem.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

I got my Y500 on Friday. At first the touchpad was working fine but after a couple of hours it started acting crazy. Nothing new here. After having tried a couple of operating systems (Win 7, Ubuntu) and uninstalling/reinstalling/updating touchpad drivers I am now convinced that this is a hardware issue. It is a shame and Lenovo need to do something about it really quick!!!

@ seguna
can you re-install the first one?

@dan-in-tx
it is possible software issue. as i said before, we just need to find proper drivers. ( similar issue - http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-V-Z-and-P-series/cursor-jumps-all-over-the-page-particularly-when-typing-in-gmail/m-p/207586#M20085 )

can you post device id? ( such as pci/ven )

right click my computer > manage > device management > not installed device - or unknown devices > device properties

They "haven't heard of that issue" because we (the consumers) figured out what the bug is for them. I have lost faith in Lenovo and their "legendary" support, I guess it gets returned for a Toshiba.

I can install the first one but for what reason? I also called again to see if would get another tech person. However the second person had no idea of this issue also. They say its a hardware issue and to return it. If you refer to this lost, it appears someone found a potential fix however it means opening it and as such you would void the warranty.

I look forward to seeing some opinions on this.

Seguna, that was a good find. Based on what n1smo did with his Y500, it appears to be a hardware problem as previously stated. Heat can do funny things within computers, especially notebooks - even the most minute expansion of metals due to heat can cause unwanted electrical contact, and that appears to be what's happening. By repositioning the tape over the touchpad connectors, he completley isolated the connector from any surrounding surfaces.

I may have to crack my U510 open and see what's in there - or take a chance with the 3 year service contract I bought and see if Lenovo can figure this out for themselves.

I've downloaded the Chinese driver from <link removed> and I'm about to see if that has any effect.

Oh, and for Yigit - I have a U510 49412PU with the Elantech touchpad, labeled as the "Lenovo Pointing Device" within device manager. Hardware ID's:

  • ACPI\VEN_ETD&DEV_060A
  • ACPI\ETD060A
  • *ETD060A

I'll report back shortly after I get the Chinese driver installed.

Chinese driver didn't work - window said "no appropriate driver to install" or something like that. I'm not even posting from the laptop because the pointer is roaming across the display randomly clicking on things - and I'm not even touching it.

OK, Synaptics driver won't install - Synaptic device not found. And the mouse is still wandering around all by itself with the stock MS drivers - this is most definitely a hardware fault.

Hello, LENOVO, are you listening????
