Re: y500 touchpad?!

2013-01-12, 17:15 PM

So. I got mine on 1/4/13 and I didnt notice any problem until 1/10/11. On that day the cursor was not stable when moving across the screen, it would jitter up and down. Oddly enough, the same thing happened wth my mouse, because the touchpad was affecting it.

Now Fast forward to today. It was completely un usable. I had to resort to Keyboard navigation to get here. Then I tried cleaning the very, very small amount of dust off the touchpad and disabling everything except two finger scrolling and tapping/clicking and now it works.

I dont know if  I should trust it. Its working fine RIGHT NOW, but what will it be like in a few minutes!

Should i return for a refund or should I hope and pray that it will work?

Yeah, I'd say that's obviously a shielding/grounding issue if I've ever seen one.

Looks like I'll await some hardware revisions before buying

All,

I wanted to share a bit on our progress on this issue..

After careful investigation, Lenovo has determined that a portion of Y500 systems with Elantech touchpads manufactured in November prior to 11/28/2012 could exhibit abnormal touchpad response characteristics. This is isolated to the Elantech touchpad assembly on these systems. Y500 systems manufactured after this date should not be affected.

Customers who experience these symptoms should contact Lenovo technical support for service to replace the touchpad assembly.  This should be done after ruling out other potential causes such as incorrect drivers or conflicts with other attached pointing devices. We are in process of checking / updating service part stock to ensure that repairs would be completed with the latest level parts.

Given the speed of the discussion here so far, I thought it was important to let you know what we've found and what we are doing as quickly as we could - as I'm communicating a bit ahead of  / in parallel with some of our actions, I would suggest that if you can delay contacting service until next week, we can have time to complete our internal communications and ensure a more consistent answer provided for resolution of these symptoms.

Thanks

Mark

Great news!
I will call the Polish service center to make sure they don't try to repair my laptop before they get your notice.
Thanks for the help!

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

I received my computer on Friday the 4th and almost immediately out of the box I had the possessed cursor/touchpad issues.  I tried the older Synaptics driver fix frompage 43 and that seeemed to work... for an hour.  Again, if this computer is defective and Lenovo knew about it then I and everyone else should receive some extra compensation.  As it is, I called tech support for help twice and their cards that they read off of were no help.  I then called "customer service" to ask for a replacement computer (this was on Monday).  They told me a rep would call within 3-5 days!!!  This is a complete joke.

I assume that "Mark" is still reading this thread.  Please advise.

I think this is actually normal behaviour for all notebooks using aluminium as a surface. My previous notebook (a MacBook) has this aswell, and other MacBooks I've worked with also have this, that's why I didn't have any problem with it on my Y500.

It's just a little vibration feeling you get when the notebook is charging.

I'm no electrician, so don't know the reason behind this, but don't think is the cause of our problem here, since it was no issue on the MacBook.

Hi guys,

I found out that after the screensaver pops up and disappears the touchpad works fine again. Question now is, can we use this to solve the problem?

Edit: Never mind, after 30 min. it starts again :(

Also, could you give us a heads up when the notice is sent to service centers?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

Hi All,

I'm not sure what to do. I purchased the Y500 with all the touchpad problems you all writing about. Tried many things and nothing helps. I use an optical mouse instead of the pad.

Mine is manufactured from Lenovo 12/11/23 (says the box).

I bought it round about Christmas say the last week of december 2012.

What are my options?

Can i return it to the shop i bought or should i call the technical support from Lenovo so they can change the pad to Synoptics instead of this Elantech pad?

A big thanks to Mark, Nine, and the engineers who found a solution to this problem.

Unfortunately, I can't send in my Y500 for the touchpad repair until I return home this May.   I don't have reliable mail delivery at my current location.

I can still receive the repair if I wait until May, correct?

Hi all,

I'm happy to report that the touchpad on my replacement PC has not exhibited any problems. This is the Synaptics touchpad from what I can tell. I am not sure that all of the gestures are working properly, though, but I need to experiment with it more.
