I recently returned my Y500. I am now using my old HP again, waiting for my new one to arrive. It feels like I have gone back to a prehistoric era, because I am using a dual Intel processor. I miss the crisp graphics and speed....but my new laptop will arrive tomorrow! It is a fully loaded HP Envy dv7t-7200. I have more drive space, a bigger screen, more ram, a quicker processor, etc. I customized and maxed out their gamer notebook.

FYI: I found a 30 percent coupon for HP online. Saved tons of $$$$. Too bad Lenovo had this problem. Otherwise, I loved the computer. But the touchpad issue made the computer completely nonfunctional. Because I do a lot of work from home, this was unconscionable.

Could you provide a link to that 30% coupon for HP online?

this one is for 25%. I don't see the 30 percent anymore.

@ darrren 12000
Thanks. I had found that one.
Guess I will just wait a while and see if they bring the 30% back.

*Update  My new replacement laptop has no problems so far.  I've been purposely not using an external mouse to make sure there is no problems with the touchpad and so far so good.  I have no keyboard issues either... Hopefully the problems don't arise in the future.  Well atleast I have a problem free y500 for now.  My replacement came with vbios 1.05 and synaptic touchpad.

So what was the solution? Do we have to send it back to lenovo? I hope not, because this laptop it's actually my unique workstation at the university.

How many days are required to have back the replacement?

MartinJiminez, about two pages back Mark at Lenovo gave us the decision on this laptop for all units with a build date prior to 11/28? i think--the build date is underneath your battery...12/11/12 would be Nov 12, 2012. Mine was one of these units but i'm in a bind. The y580 i want to replace it with i can't just reorder so i need to exchange the y500 for a y580.

Hopefully support cust svc has this notation about the touchpad defect and you should be able to call and get a service order started

This is the original message from Mark:

All,

I wanted to share a bit on our progress on this issue..

After careful investigation, Lenovo has determined that a portion of Y500 systems with Elantech touchpads manufactured in November prior to 11/28/2012 could exhibit abnormal touchpad response characteristics. This is isolated to the Elantech touchpad assembly on these systems. Y500 systems manufactured after this date should not be affected.

Customers who experience these symptoms should contact Lenovo technical support for service to replace the touchpad assembly.  This should be done after ruling out other potential causes such as incorrect drivers or conflicts with other attached pointing devices. We are in process of checking / updating service part stock to ensure that repairs would be completed with the latest level parts.

Given the speed of the discussion here so far, I thought it was important to let you know what we've found and what we are doing as quickly as we could - as I'm communicating a bit ahead of  / in parallel with some of our actions, I would suggest that if you can delay contacting service until next week, we can have time to complete our internal communications and ensure a more consistent answer provided for resolution of these symptoms.

Thanks

Mark

I called "support" this morning and will be having an updated computer sent to exchange with my faulty one.

Once I receive and test the new "functioning" computer I will send back the old one and get refunded. (since I didn't want to be without a computer while they sent the replacement it was necessary to purchase another computer)

So its possible to get a replacement first and then send the laptop back? That sounds great! Did you have to struggle with support service?

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

I just got done requesting my RMA for refund, and suggest you all do the same before it is too late.

In addition to the faulty touchpad, my Y500 has a hyper sensitive optical drive bay that constantly ejects if I lightly touch the bezel.  The device also shipped without the MS Office license card that I ordered.  Every Dell I have ever ordered has always had the license card in the box without fail; I would have been better off buying a retail copy.

I contacted support two weekends in a row to get some assistance on these issues.  Both times their systems were “down for maintenance.”  The lack of support was unacceptable and is the straw that broke this camel’s back.

I wish IBM would have held on to their laptop/desktop segment.   They would have never allowed these things to happen.
