That is a genius idea! The keyboard was always the hardest part for me!

For those who have opened up their boxes, does it look like the touchpad could be unplugged and replaced easily?  I'm wondering if we can get the part number for the synaptics version and replace ourselves unless its some custom part.

@kodabear

As I remember, it looked like it was completely attached to the top plate. After you take out the keyboard, the rest of the top face is all attached. So as far as I know, you'd have to get a whole other piece (palm rest and all)...

Sad to see this is stil a problem

2013-01-18, 13:51 PM

I bought the Y500 as a Christmas present for myself. I fell in love with it immediately. But, then, the touchpad issues struck, I tried to use it a little over a week, but I finally gave up. I scheduled a return and ordered an HP gamer. Yesterday, I received my new HP. It actually has more storage, RAM, a higher Intel i7 and the same NVIDIA 650 graphics with 2GB reserved for graphics. The screen is also 17". It cost a little more, but, hey, it also works!

I fund a 30% discount for HP online just using a google search. If you are struggling with your touchpad, I think this is the best option - regardless of the new computer you get. You shouldn't have to disassemble your computer to get it to work. Since this is only happening to a fraction of the computers in only one products line, this isn't a top priority. Only the media could make it a high priority issue. That's just the nature of things.

I'm on my second y500 with the same touchpad issue.  The first one I ordered had the touchpad issue right away.  I thought if I returned that one and ordered a new one, everything would be fine.  But no.  A few days after I received the second y500 it started having the same touchpad issue.  When I called tech support about the second laptop, they still were not aware of this issue and had no idea how to fix it.  They suggested I send it back for a replacement.  At this point, ordering a third y500 from Lenovo seems crazy.  I guess it's time to return this one and hit up Google for an alternative machine.

What is the model number for the HP that you got?  I want to read up on it just for my own situational awareness.  I'm keeping this Y500 even with all it's problems it is a very cool computer.  I mostly play games on this laptop and it did great in airport terminals as long as I find an AC outlet and free wifi!

Yes, seems like Lenovo has grown too fast for its own good.  Good luck with your next machine!

@Mark
Is it safe to send it for repair to Lenovo?
And... I ask before..

HOW do they repair?

Hold it for a few weeks and send it unrepaired back?

What about the 21 Day Return Policy?
How do we get our money back after 21 days as everyone know the bad design and crazy touchpad on delivery?
