Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

@MartinJimenez I live in the Netherlands and there is only one repair centre here. I sent my laptop last Monday using the standard postal services here (PostNL) and Lenovo received it a day later.

they said repair would take about 10 business days, so I hope to get it back in about 1.5 weeks.

I've just done a configuration change that for the time being keeps my touchpad from getting crazy. In the Elan- SMARTPAD configuration I disabled the first option och the first tab (directly translated from swedisgh it says clicking). And I instead use the button that I press when i press the whole touchpad for that function (it's the default function and cannot be changed). After that Ive ha no issues for now 5 hours. Could anyone else with this strange touchpad try it out?

I believe someone had mentioned this already but maybe it is worth revisiting.  How many of you with the touchpad problem does not have Google Chrome installed?  I say this because someone had mentioned that Chrome was the cause of the touchpad issue or at least it magnified the problem.  I could almost swear that the touchpad feels a little better in Internet Explorer.  Just a thought.  I'm not going to use Chrome for the next few days and see what happens.

It's not Google Chrome. I didn't download Chrome.

Trust me; they have been one here. They deleted several posts yesterday.

Nothing works! This thread is almost 2 months old. I hated losing the laptop, but it will not suddenly stop doing it. You shouldn't have to fix your own new computer. I don't know about yours, but I couldn't use my laptop at all when the cursor was messing up. It would open windows, click links....It almost made purchases on Amazon.com -- because I have "1-Click" enabled.

So I tried a couple more things to fix my touchpad. Today I openned it up again and I decided to remove the electrical tape I had placed. Something I noticed about the tape was that it kept being drawn to my skin via static electricity. Which means it held a charge from when I turned it off. My thought was that there was some static buildup that wasn't properly getting grounded. It looks like the silver tape is supposed to ground the touchpad by connecting it to the case. Since there was some leftover charge on the electrical tape I removed, I thought it wasn't grounding properly. So I decided to remove the tape and replace it with a cooper wire. When I turned the computer on, immediately the touchpad freaked out. (This never happened to me before. It always took some time before the touchpad started freaking out.) Based on that, it would seem like the wire made it worse, or perhaps INCREASED the interferance on the touchpad. So the next thing I did was remove the tape all together. I have not had any problems since and the touchpad actually seems to be responding better even. I don't know why this would have helped exactly but it seems to have helped. Granted it has only been a few hours so I will post an update soon if it still works, but for now, still working!

TL;DR:
As far as it looks like, removing the silver tape fixed the problem.

Nice!  Please give hourly reports on your findings... j/k  but please continue to update.  I might open her up again and remove the silver tape.  LOL!  I did lose control of the touchpad last night which resulted in me having to put the laptop to sleep.  I was laying in bed under the sheets with the laptop on top of my belly.  I think there was plenty of static electricity built up so I think you have a solid theory!  The funny thing was, every time the issue arises I am using Google Chrome so I switched to Internet Explorer and the issue never came  back again last night.  I stayed up extra late in bed to try to get it to freak out and it never did while I was using Explorer.

Update:  I've removed the silver grounding tape.  Let's see what happens.

What did Lenovo say about this issue? (or are they silent) can we just send it in for fixing and get a New Touchpad? or is it more complicated? can i get a new y500 instead (w/o the problem?)

and is the UPS cost free or do we have to pay?

what i want to know is did they sell us a product after they new there was an issue with it (i got mine 10/12/12)
