Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

2013-01-26, 20:16 PM

Update:  I received my advance-replacement Y500 yesterday, 20+ days after my initial call to post-sales.  I unboxed and started inspecting it today.  I was really hoping for a Synaptics touchpad...  it's what I told the support and sales reps that I wanted.  I also wanted WiDi and the HD4000 active.  Instead, they sent me a machine that was built on the SAME DAY as my broken one, 12/11/2012.  The serial numbers are only a couple thousand numbers apart! :smileymad:

So, of course, I end up with another ELAN touchpad that is sure to break in a week or two.  I don't use the touchpad often so I'm going to have to make sure to really give it a workout this weekend.  As far as the graphics, I think hope is lost for a WiDi solution any time soon, if ever... which is really sad because the HD4000 supports 3 monitors at once (according to intel's spec sheet).  I could really use that...  2 monitors plus laptop screen or 2 monitors plus a WiDi display would be great.  Not in the cards, it seems.

I can't wait to hear what post sales has to say when I call on Monday.  I realize stock is low on these things because of this, but sending out the same faulty equipment as a replacement is just plain wrong.  Especially when it has already been admitted that this is an ELAN only issue.  I'll be keeping both of these for a week or so until I'm satisfied that it's not going to break again.  I'm sure it will break the day after I send it back, regardless... and then I'll be right back here to tell you all about it :smileylol:

WARNING - RANT AHEAD:  I've said it before and I'll say it again... I will probably continue to buy Lenovo because I'm an I.T. guy and I can appreciate the value and I don't mind fixing the little things myself along the way.  BUT, a lot of folks come to me to ask what laptop to buy.  I can't send them to Lenovo because of things like this.  The problem isn't the fact that there's a flaw with the Y500... it's new engineering; these things happen, QC or no QC.  Even Boeing isn't immune to it, as you can see on the news.  It's the poor response, though, that finally drives a customer away.  If Boeing sent out replacement 787 airplanes with the same exact faulty batteries, the airlines would probably start buying AirBus instead.  I realize in practice there's a big difference between that and my replacement laptop, but in principle it's the same thing.

@bearfight:
That is really alarming that they sent out the same model to you again... I hope this one is magically fixed for you.

I also completely agree with your rant. I have been very happy with my previous Thinkpad, so that gave me respect for Lenovo. Even the Y500 aside from the touchpad has been great for me. In addition, I realize that computers are incredibly complex and that engineering mistakes happen. That being said, the poor response to this issue is what really is disappointing and what will cause me to be very wary before recommending Lenovo computers to anyone.

I hope Lenovo learns something from this experience because I really like a lot of what they do which is what makes this even more of a let down.

@Bearfight

Try doing a lot of left and right mouse clicks for testing. It's also a good excuse to play Angry Birds!

The Synaptics touchpad is way better than the Elan, but I'm still going to return my Y500 because they gipped us re WiDi (one of the main reasons I selected this machine).

Good luck,

J.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

I got this laptop last December 2012.

I just started to experience these issue recently since Ive been using a mouse and external keyboard.

 I was on my way to a coffee shop and wanted to use the track pad and basically use it for portablitliy.

I then notice that the track pad started to move around like crazy by its self. I try to browse and my tracokpad seem to jitter around like mad.

I also notice the KEYBOARD. It was also acting funny. I would type reguarly and it would back space and jump around all over my document and delte my typing every where, It was as though it lost control.

Am I able to return this for another unit? Seems like everyone isnt getting the repair they neeod. I love this laptop for its feature and stylish looks but man, I dont want to give it up.

If I cant return it, I might sell on ebay . Let me know what you guys think

Hope you wouldn't be selling a defective machine for full price on ebay... I'm sure you can still either send it in for repair and hope you get a fixed oneback, or they might allow returns even outside of the 21 days since it's their fault. Call sales.

Besides going beyond the 21 days return/refund policy, I believe the laptop comes with a warranty so you are entitled to that.

Also, I would assume Lenovo would take full responsibility since the part is defective.

I was having the same problems with the ELAN touchpad. I've had my y500 for about a week, ordered it around the 17th of January 2013. So, it doesn't look like they replaced all the ELAN touchpads.

I ran across some ELAN drivers here http://www.station-drivers.com/page/elantech.htm   Version 11.7.8.5

Once installed the control panel for the touchpad is different and branded Samsung, yet has all the same functionality of the default Lenovo control panel.

I now have no issues with the touchpad, no jumping, moving, selecting, random clicking, etc.. So to me it does seem to be just a driver issue.

Update:  For me, removing the silver tape did not work.  In my case, what has worked so far is to relocate the grounding point (silver tape).  It is still the same point on the touchpad, but on the cover side, it is now grounded directly to the aluminum top as opposed to the stock point which is painted plastic (conductive paint?).  Anyway, been on the computer all day and still have not had the touchpad issues come back.
