Actually, the manufactor date is right on the box.  If the "date" is to be believed, you can tell before even opening your box if your touchpad is going to be broken or not.

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

I must say that it is extremelly frustrating that Lenovo (take note Mark) is still sending out machines that were manufactured with Elan pads prior to 11/28/12 (or w/e date they swapped to synaptic pads).  I ordered mine on 1/21/2013, almost 2 months later, and I recieved a unit that was manufactured on 11/25/12 with an Elan pad.  Either remove them from inventory completey, or send them all to servicing to be updated and fitted with working touchpads.

It is also frustrating that in order to remedy the situtaion I need to send the laptop back to be serviced due to a screwup on Lenovo's part.

For those of thus that are handy and don't mind tinkering, at least send us replacement Synaptic touchpads or something.

darrren12000,

I was trying to piece together how long it took for you to get your refund.  It looked like you returned it around January 6, and received the refund Jan 28.  Is that about right?  20+ days?

I didn't bother calling for a refund/RMA since I really dont have time to sit on hold all day -- rather I did the whole thing over email which actually went really smooth.  (Other than the broken english in the email responses).  Now just waiting for the transaction to clear.

I am sending my faulty Y500 back to Lenovo for a refund today after work. I'll make sure that I post back with details on how long the refund process takes and if there are any setbacks or hurdles. I was told by the support rep that it takes 2-3 business days to issue the refund after Lenovo receives the device. I sincerely hope the process doesn't take 20+ days.

It would be awesome if they could send us the touchpads instead (functioning elan touchpads).

I am wondering, is the synaptics touchpad very different from the Elan one (in terms of geometry), is it neccesary to change the case/cover?

I purchased it from www.lenovo.com on 1/21/2013 and it has a manufacture date of 11/25/2012.

Coming from a manufacturing and quality perspective, it doesn't make sense how a company can knowingly continue to ship products that they deem may have defective components if built after a certain date of manufacture.  Why would Lenovo not quarantine those machines and have them updated with quality components.  It seems like a wise decision to spend the capitol up front rather than waste money in shipping and inevitable returns…

Mark,
Alright, I've sent the data to you too. It might be worth noting that for the first couple of day my touchpad produced a different behaviour. It freezed from time to time. Though for the last couple of days before sending the unit in, my cursor started to randomly click and drift across the screen just as the others posted.
I'm sorry if I sounded overly impatient but this whole ordeal starts to really annoy me.
I'm looking forward to your insight on the situation.

well I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with Lenovo support, the guy sounded clueless and said he never heard of this touchpad issue before and has only seen 2-3 cases of touchpad issues in the past. I was like dude, go check your forums and check out the 80 page thread as well as the dozens of videos on youtube about this issue.
