Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

2013-02-05, 17:00 PM

I just received my Y500 back from repair, and the touchpad has been replaced by another ELAN touchpad.

The box I received it in was in pretty banged up shape and the delivery notice is missing. This is not Lenovo's fault, but I'm unhappy about it.

I called Lenovo's service desk in order to find out what has been repaired.

The new touchpad is reacting slow, but that may be the driver settings. I'm performing a systemrestore and will start using it after that.

What I did discover, is that the new touchpad has not been properly fixed in place. When I put my finger on the lower part, you can hear the touchpad drop just a little bit. In my opinion, it has not been replaced correctly, but I don't know if I'm willing to wait another four weeks for it to get repaired.

I will first work with it for a while to see if the issue of the dancing cursor is resolved. If it is, I'll tighten the touchpad or bring it back for repair.

if the problem is still there, I'll return it for a refund and look for another brand/model.

Update: After a clean system reset, Windows did not recognise the touchpad with ELAN drivers. I uninstalled them and installed the Synaptics drivers and now it works.

They have replaced my touchpad with a synaptics one after all.

The only issue is still that it's "loose", it ticks when i touch it and it's not supposed to do that.

I think that I'll open my Y500 up and see if I can fix it myself. I don't want to loose it for 3 weeks again just so they can tighten the screws.

Just because you installed a synaptics driver doesn't mean you have a synaptics touch pad.  I also installed the synaptics driver with a ELAN touch pad and the touch pad was still "responsive" but erratic none the less.

I can't wait to see what pot luck brings me in another day or 2, or maybe 3 who knows at this rate.

I am just stunned at the lack of customer service,  I had bought a Dell before this laptop a 17R Inspiron and it was a nice laptop but the screen lacked vibrance and was very washed out and it's level of sharpness was very poor.  Since I am a photographer I need the best possible screen.  Dell went above and beyond to make sure I was happy and going as far as offering to refund me $100 to keep the laptop which I wish I could have.  Lenovo doesn't want your business, they prey off the average Joe who doesn't know their elbow from apple butter.  If this doesn't work out I may just sell a kidney and get a MacBook.

Is there a way to communicate (let the other Lenovo people) with the top level people at Lenovo to help them stop this unfortunate problem? I am waiting to receive the Y500 on the 07th of Feb., and I wish not to receive one from the bad batch!

Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

Just got UPS notification: my third Y500 is due to be delivered tomorrow.  We'll see if it is a post 11/28/12 machine or another pre- 11/28/12 machine.  I was not expecting a delivery for at least a month due to the reported lack of supply for the post-ELAN machines.  I'm worried that receieving another replacement so soon means that I will get yet another pre- 11/28 model.  I'll give another update after I unbox the machine tomorrow.

This is my second replacement.  To get my full replacement story dating back to december, (working title: musical laptops) see my other posts here:  Re: Lenovo Ideapad Y500 Touchpad Not Working

@kryznic
I took the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, which are for ELAN and Synaptic, and this driver recognized my touchpad as a Synaptic.
Windows shows the manufacturer as Synaptic, and all the gestures work.

I'm pretty confident about which touchpad I've got now.

Note: I'm from the Netherlands and my laptop was repaired in Germany, so it seems that they are doing the right thing here. I wish all you guys in the states the best of luck and hope for you that your Y500 will be fitted with a new touchpad as well.
I added a note to my laptop when I sent it back, explaining the issue and pointing out this forum thread (specifically page 42 where Mark_Lenovo explains the problem). Maybe that helped.

I also included Mark's page 42 reply in my note to the service depot techs.  If they do in fact give me a Synaptics touchpad, I'll be satisfied.

It's still odd that they didn't send your notebook back with the correct drivers, though.

I sent them a completely clean system with one user sample user account made.
It looks like the replaced the touchpad and only turned it on to check if it was working, but besides that they did nothing.

I hope they'll fix your laptop soon.

Against better judgement, I opened up my Y500.

The touchpad seems to be in place correctly. Just to be sure, I added some tape to the plastich brackets of the touchpad, and all is well now.

My problem has been solved and I can finally start enjoying this laptop.

I'd like to thank Mark_Lenovo for his support and wish all of you the best.

I'm signing off.
