Lenovo P1 - latest update - Thunderbolt 3 Dock - external screens start flickering

2021-05-04, 15:30 PM

Hello everybody,

today I installed all latest updates that the Lenovo Vantage tool showed me up.

Installation without any problems.

Intel Management Engine Firmware (Windows 10 Version 1703 or Later) - 10 [64] - 12.0.72.1757
ThinkPad BIOS Update - 10 [64] - 1.35
Intel Bluetooth Driver(Windows 10 Version 1709 Or Later) - 10 [64] - 21.110.0.3
NVIDIA And Intel Video Drivers(Windows 10 Version 1803 or later) - 10 [64] - 27.21.14.5266

Failed installations
ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 / Workstation dock Firmware Update Tool - 10 [64] - 3.1.68
Thunderbolt Firmware Update Tool On P1-Series - 10 [64] - 17.0.0.18-N2ETF19W

Then the trouble started. My external screens connected to Thunderbolt 3 Dock starts flickering and switched on and of every few seconds....really awful. No work possible.
I tried several times again to install the failed two thunderbold updates for the docking station. No chance, always same message installation failed. Also with all unplugged  devices from the docking station. Just the two power cords and connection to the P1 was plugged in. All failed...
After an internet search I found the latest firmware trdockfw3168.exe and installed it successfully.

But the flickering issue did not stop.
I have no idea what is going. Anyone here who can help?
Seems I have now the latest firmware installed for the dock but the flickering drives me crazy.

Thanks for your help

Hello netwalker78,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

I'm sorry if there are issues with the updates.
For the failed ones, I suggest that you try the updates thru the support site instead.
Then go to BIOS, load the default settings and then make sure to save before exiting.
Update us how it goes

Stay safe

Regards,
Lorenzo_Lenovo

Problem solved!

All thunderbold installations that I could find in Windows Apps and Features were removed.

Then run again Lenovo Update tool and installed all updates...

This one failed again...but who cares. PC is running well again :-)
