Re:Lenovo Y50-70 turns on but has black screen

True... I just revived my dead laptop by following the instructions. The laptop Y50-70 was starting ( backlight of the keyboard was working, fans spinning, dark screen with nothing visible ).

I tried what was described here by Koni5560 and it worked.

After his instructions, the laptop rebooted and it was not booting from the SSD. I had to go in the bios via the lenovo boot button or whatever is called, enter BIOS and change from UEFI to Legacy mode and reboot. After that all started like a charm.

Also I used the 3.00 version of the bios from the links instead of the 1.14, so it should work with that as well. Don't get scared that the *.rom file is called WinZIVY2X64_8M. Just follow Koni's instructions and save it with the names he provided and it should work, at least it did for me. I also saw that the BIOS is 3.00 and the EC was 3.03 but this didn't cause any problem. I suppose they can be different.

Thanks a ton again for the wonderful fix.

This fixed my dead laptop. I used the 3.0 BIOS. I tried for weeks about 2 years ago to fix it, it finally wouldn't boot and that was it. I thought I would take a crack at it today and I came across your post. Thanks to you I recovered an expensive laptop that only lasted me less then 2 years. I repurposed the OS drive that was in the laptop, luckily I saved a backup and is now restored and running.

Where did you find the bios files? I only find .exe files and no zip/rar files of the bios!

I knew about this forum post for about 6 months but didn't get around to trying this fix until today on my Y50-70.

I found the bios file for 1.14 here: https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-REQUEST-Lenovo-Y50-70-9ECNxxWW-BIOS-Unlock?page=35

So far it seems to have worked.

EDIT: As mentioned above, I had to change the boot mode to legacy to get it to boot from the SSD.

EDIT: Because I'm a new user I can't add additional replies. To answer another question above, you extract the ROM file from the EXE file. Use 7zip or other unzipping tool to extract.

Just checking in to say cheers to everyone.
I've had a few people inbox me with tales of no success, my best advice is to, try various BIOS versions.

I'm not a hardware expert, so I don't know for sure if that will resolve the issues, but I hope it does.

Re:Lenovo Y50-70 turns on but has black screen

I can't believe this worked from the first try, and without praying! Thank you so much for this.

I used V3.00, which had the rom file. Downloaded it by following the link from here https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series-Notebooks/Y50-Bios-3-03-problem/m-p/2178818?page=1#2188110, and then replaced .txt in url with .exe.

I then extracted the .exe file using 7zip Then simply copied the file to each of the different names needed (on mac): cp WinZIVY2X64_8M.ROM WinZIVY2X64_8M.BI (and so on)

Because file name was slightly different (WinZIVY2X64_8M.ROM), I improvised and added capitalized versions of the file just in case.

Here's my file list:

  • WINZIVY2X64.BI
  • WINZIVY2X64.BIN
  • WINZIVY2X64.FD
  • WINZIVY2X64.ROM
  • WINZIVY2X64.WPH
  • WinZIVY2X64_8M.BI
  • WinZIVY2X64_8M.BIN
  • WinZIVY2X64_8M.FD
  • WinZIVY2X64_8M.ROM
  • WinZIVY2X64_8M.WPH
  • ZAVY2.BI
  • ZAVY2.BIN
  • ZAVY2.FD
  • ZAVY2.ROM
  • ZAVY2.WPH
  • ZIVY2.BI
  • ZIVY2.BIN
  • ZIVY2.FD
  • ZIVY2.ROM
  • ZIVY2.WPH

The laptop started exactly like described: 100% fan speed, and then started beeping.

WARNING: the beeping sound is very loud and it continues beeping every second or so for a good couple of minutes. I bet my neighbors thought my fire alarm went off.

After this, I saw a blue oldschool box on the screen saying something about network not available (can't remember). Then I switched the laptop off by pressing the power button, connected SSD and Battery, started it again, and got my win 10 login screen. Now if only I remembered my password.. :) maybe another day
