Lenovo Y580 GPU problems

2012-11-05, 12:46 PM

I recently bought the Lenovo Y580 with the GTX 660M. Optimus at the moment is giving me problems. Basically some times it works and sometimes it doesn't. The GPU doesn't always engage when I enter a game. All the latest updates and drivers are installed(306.97). I have also tried the slightly older driver as well as the new Beta and same results. Running a game through the NVidia Control Panel/Manage 3D settings and choosing the .exe of a game to use the High Performance Nvidia CPU doesn't work. Neither dose right clicking on a game and choosing the GPU. At the moment I am getting about 40fps on Alan Wake on Ultra, but on another day below 20. Sometimes reinstalling the driver works...but then stops working when using the laptop the next day. Then have to reinstall the driver, but again doesn't always work.

What could be the problem? I have looked around and a lot of people with different tipes of laptops and GPUs have this problem.

I think I found the problem. The lenovo power management was the culprit. Will be watching for a few days to see if this fixes everything...

Hi

Welcome To Lenovo Community

We are really sorry to hear about the issue you were facing,

Since you have found the issue, But if it appears again

You can try booting the system to safe mode by tapping F8 button at startup

Once you boot to safe mode, you should try Clean Boot  option

And restart the system to normal mode and check

Do give this a try and let us know the results

Hope This Helps

Cheers!!!

Re: Lenovo Y580 GPU problems

Hello, same issues here. I also noticed, that when i start windows GPU is always working on 835/2499mhz which is not very efficient to save computer from heat and save battery. Also tried GPU-Z to check clock speeds, and once i run GPU-Z, GPU enters power saving mode - 135/405mhz. It is strange, i dont know and whenever i leave GPU-Z running, clock is working good, once i close it, clock gets back to 835/2500. Games most of the time run ok, and even if im not running GPU-Z and alt-tab game, gpu clocks decrease from 835/2499mhz (ingame) to 135/405mhz (desktop). But once i leave a game, clocks get back to unefficient 835/2500mhz. Several times i noticed, that my GPU stopped responding. At that moment i check device manager and see that instead of 660m GTX there is standard video adapter with exclamation mark. I restart computer, everything is ok. Somethings is clearly wrong with some drivers, maybe with nvidia, maybe with power management. Lenovo, please respond.

Running Windows 7 64-bit, latest nvidia and power management drivers.

Try the following driver. It actually increases my performance. You can see that the windows experience index for gaming goes high by 0.1 with this drivers

By the way. Nvidia optimus technology should completely turn off 660m GTX while on battery or doing light office work. IT IS NOT (at least on Lenovo y580). If no programs use nvidia card it just stays on and goes to 835/2499mhz state which heats up computer which is not even doing anything! On battery nvidia card does not switch off also, it stays on 135/405mhz state and lags even watching youtube videos. Lenovo please respond and take responsability on what you created.

I must agree this problem is realy starting to piss me off, this laptop is HALF A YEAR OLD and they have not fixed this.

If this aint fixed soon i want a dam refund so i can finally get a working laptop that can actually play games on battery and not stutter every couple of seconds.
