Lenovo Y580 Re-Installing Issues

2012-07-20, 19:49 PM

Hi everyone,

Hope someone can help me with this.

I just received the Y580 that came preinstalled with a bunch of programs. I did a clean install of Windows 7 and updated the drivers (I created a backup disc of the programs/drivers that came in the D: drive on the computer).

After updating what I can update and install, I noticed the following:

1) Lenovo EE Boot Optimizer is not included in the D: drive - thus, I could not/cannot install this program/driver

2) Intelligent Touchpad (a really cool feature) is not included in the D: drive - thus, I could not/cannot install this program/driver

3) When I tried installing Lenovo YouCam, it states that I can only install YouCam on LEGEND Dragon system (I'm so perplexed by this - **bleep** is that?)

4) When I tried installing Veriface, it states that I can only install Veriface in a Lenovo computer (this is a Lenovo computer!)

Note that, based on my research, it seems Intelligent Touchpad is a Lenovo program and not a third party program.

a) Where can I find these drivers/programs to install? It's not on the website

b) How can I install YouCam and Veriface?

Any help is appreciated - I tried calling tech support, but the guy appeared clueless.

Thanks.

I just got a Y480 and also did a clean install of Windows 7. I copied the drivers in the D: drive, too, and also just noticed that Lenovo EE Boot Optimizer and Intelligent Touchpad are missing from there. Nothing obivous in Google searches for them, either... Really strange!

Did you leave the OneKey Recovery partition? You probably didn't (I definitely didn't :P), but in case you did, you can reinstall OneKey Recovery and the program can use that partition to revert to how it was when you got it (i.e. with Lenovo EE Boot Optimizer and Intelligent Touchpad installed, etc.).

If you learn anything else, please post here and let me know, too, though!

Actually, if you search Google Lenovo EE Boot Optimizer, you can find downloads for it from various Lenovo webpages. No luck with the Intelligent Touchpad, though. :/

Also, I'm getting the "This software can only be installed on a LEGEND Dragon System" error when I tried to reinstall YouCam, too... Freaking most bizzare-sounding error, ever.

Lenovo quality assurance needs to step up its game, I think...!

Hi,

you wiped the system and reinstalled Windows,

The missing Lenovo programs are included in OEM installed pc's.

The easiest way to get them all back, would be to restore the OEM install via

Recovery discs you may have burned with OKR,BEFORE you wiped the system.

Other members here may offer more suggestions, other things that you can do.

Good luck

Re: Lenovo Y580 Re-Installing Issues

After getting bounced back and forth between at least 7 people who were giving me BS answers (Lenovo, get a grip on your tech staff - this is FAR the most horrible experience I've ever had with any tech support people), I finally got a somewhat straight answer.

BTW - after this experience, I'm still debating on returning my computer because I don't want to deal with the BS that I had with Lenovo tech support.

Essentially, given that these brands are new, they don't have the adequate drivers available for the public. In gaming terminology, they didn't beta test the computer nor are they adequately prepared to meet the influx of complaints and questions that people have with the computer. Additionally, and I find this really odd and somewhat infuriating, THEY DO NOT HAVE A LENOVO Y580 FACTORY RESTORE DISK MADE. You can buy a 'generic' factory restore disk, but apparently it's incomplete.

I finally got a hold of someone high up who admitted to the incompleteness of their software support.

Bottom line - they don't have the drivers available for the public. They're still working on it. In fact, the drivers that they have available to download from their website is outdated (the drivers that came with the computer is more up to date).

They are supposed to update the drivers/software/information on the lenovo website on July 23. And, hopefully, they will have most/all the drivers and an actual legit factory restore disk within a month.

Lenovo really upset me - I spent literally 5 hours talking to multiple people who bounced me back and forth. I eventually had to threaten to do a credit card decline on the purchase and was gonna ship this back to them because of the lack of assistance and knowledge they had. One guy tried to sell me on the warranty, saying that I can pay $60 for them to install the drivers onto my computer (remotely) or I can get a 'software' warranty for $60. He even tried to 'sweeten' the deal.

I eventually was able to get a confirmation that I have one of the following options: a) just wait for them to pick up the pace and get the drivers out to their customers or b) send in my laptop and have them reinstall everything (really replace) the harddrive to its default factory setting, free of charge.

Extremely disappointing. I chose Lenovo because of it's reputable tech support.

Wow, that is absurd that they don't have a Y580 Factory Restore Disk made... I don't even really understand how that could be possible...!?! They need to have some disk that they use to install everything on to the machines before they leave the factory, after all...

Maybe you can find someone here who bought a Y580 and would be willing to burn factory restore disks (using the OneKey Recovery program) and mail them to you. I certainly would, but I have a Y480, unfortunately.

I noticed that -for my Y480- the drivers on their website are mostly out of date (actually older than what comes pre-installed on the machine), too. That said, some of the Intel drivers were actually (though unsurprisingly) newer on Intel's website than on either Lenovo's or what came pre-installed, so I ended up going around and checking driver/software versions for everything manually, anyway. I hope they do update their driver/software page tomorrow--it's a mess right now!
