Re: Lenovo ideapad Y510p SLI Crashing

Thanks Dasian89.

After tons of digging I found out that if you undervolt the ultra bay card in your SLI configuration everything seems to be OK. I just played the Division beta & Fallout 4 for a couple of hours without any issues.

For those in my boat, if you download MSI afterburner and reduce the Memory speed of the 2ND GPU you should be able to play in SLI. I guess it's just improperly overclocked from the factory.

Well if that is the case, then there is an unlocked BIOS available on TI forums that can unlock all kinds of settings to tweak with both GPUs. I have it installed on my Y510P and always initialize the undervolting when playing the latest games.

If you decide to install that BIOS -

1) Do not EVER edit any option in BIOS, Keep them default.

2) Use any software such as NVIDIA Inspector to undervolt the GPU.

3) Follow the steps carefully and do read the forum before using that BIOS. There is a possibility that if you hurry or do not pay attention, you can brick your laptop.

4) Last I checked, only laptops with BIOS 3.05 and lower could install that unlocked BIOS.

Good luck.

I don't think flashing the bios is a good idea. Many of us is not a tech guy, i would say why not lenovo come out with a fix for this? I think this is the correct way to solve user issue right?

hi how do you configure the MSI afterburner? And what memory clock speed you configure for the 2nd GPU? Thanks.

Flashing the BIOS is a brilliant idea but ofcourse you need to be tech savvy to pursue that course of action.

Lenovo is not going to unlock your BIOS, nor they will re-paste your Ultrabay GPU (for normal wear and tear).

I wish they would, but I think unlocking BIOS would cause more problems for non-tech guys by giving them complex BIOS option.

I dont know how someone can use MSI Afterburner to change settings since the CPU and GPU are locked by the BIOS.

The problem with Ultrabay GPU is the airflow, its completely blocked due to a design flaw. This post (modification) fixes the air flow -

Just doing this mod, reduced my temps by 5-8 degrees. make sure most of the fan is visible after your remove the excessive plastic.

Also, I have the dust filter removed to help with better air circulation. It may lead to some dust accumulation over some months, but it can be easily cleaned using compressed air.

(This solution is best if you do not travel a lot with your laptop)

Hi Rocky,

Thanks for sharing this, i had already done this for months and it really helps in lowering the temperatures. Weird things are although my GPU2 is on lower temperature it will still crashes the game when i enable SLI in nvidia control panel. The conclusion i would say is i am suspecting my ultrabay is faulty?

Hello all!

I have lenovo y510p dual-card 750m. I almost broke the laptop from the fact that almost all the games were broken during the game. But then I found this video made in Russia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVaQujCgUaI

It really solved all the problems with the games))

After 4 years after buying this laptop, I enjoy his power. It is a pity that the producers did not occur until this immediately .

Enjoy! It is realy working for me

P.S. Video with English manual

just for another reference in the future, i'm lower the memory clock speed by -400 ~ -500 MHz using nvidiainspector and never have a problem since then, no need to underclock the core clock, no need to undervolt the voltage.
