When its limited you router and/or cable/dsl modem are not seeing the internet. DSN server down is one issue which will cause the yellow flag and internet problem at the ISP will of course do it. Assuming your cables and equipment are fine then there is an outage.

With some hardware the modem and router both need to be booted. (power off both and then the modem then the router) see if it works.

All modems have a status screen you can browse to. DSL is easy as its the gateway IP address. Some cable modems its 192.168.100.1 for Thompson 476 which you can see if its connected to the IPS server with and IP address and confirmation. Lights on them usually indicate this if you know how to read them Your ISP will be able to tell you how to verify the connection to them if in doubt.

Hi

Sorry in my haste to post I missed some info.

3 other laptops + mobile phones all connect to the router/internet with no problems, just the Z710.

I have re-booted the router many times with no improvement.

I have spoken with isp provider (virgin) and they have tried remotely to fix the problem and failed.

The router has been reset to factory defaults, no improvement.

Its difficult to trouble shoot via texts.

Is this the original Oem install of Win 8.1?
Does it work if you plug in with a patch cable to the router?

If you have the current updateds for Win8.1 installed from Lenovo downloads. You can try - uninstalling the drivers for the WiFi adapter then uninstall the device. After its complete do a RESTART (not a shutdown) as we want a COLD boot. The device will get detected and drivers installed again.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I have been able to get to the internet via an rj45 cable into the router.

ALL available win 8.1 updates have been installed last night. still unable to use wifi after all updates.

(for me a cold boot is full power off & then turn on, so i'm a little confused by your description)

I have uninstalled the adapter dirivers and powered off/restarted, device was then detected. still unable to use wifi.

I have changed to broadcom driver from windows driver. still unable to use wifi.

As a short term fix I have installed mini usb wifi adapter (netgear) which is working. However I would prefer to fix the original problem as I need to take this to a clients site to use and I may loose the usb adapter (I'm like that!)

You may have a defective WiFi controller. If it worked before and not now then it appears the most likely.

POWER OFF is crash closing unless the sytems is configured to do something different when the power button is pressed and configured in the Power Profile settings.

Going to the Windows icon and right click on it you should see after pointing to the Shutdown line - Shutdown as well as restart

The difference is Shutdown writes a hibernate file which is read on the next boot for fast starting. Restart does not read it! There is another way of also doing a cold reboot in Win 8.1 but I don't recall. Win 10 is the same. You can google info on it.

Thanks

for the reply.

Just to clarify.

The wifi adapter installed in the laptop has never worked. I purchased it 31 Oct 2016.

Also, by power off I mean right click start/shutdown. allow laptop to fully shutdown. followed by a normal start up ie start  from 'cold'.

not right click start/restart.

hope that helps, sorry if I confused the situation.

FYI

The laptop is only a few days old, it was re-furbished by Lenovo and sold by a licensed reseller with a 12 month warranty. However there is some problem, with the warranty, so at this point I'm on my own. Hence why I'm here asking for help. Which is greatly appreciated.

I appears you need a new WiFi card. Note: It has to be a Lenovo card as well. Since they White List parts like that before they'll be recognized on boot up.
