Lifespan of a laptop!

2008-10-08, 13:21 PM

This is an odd question to ask , what will be the average lifespan of a laptop?

My desktop which is  compaq presario run 24 7 non stop for the past 6 years. well i changed the crt with the lcd

can i expect the same for a laptop?

is it the compaqs quality? can we expect this from lenovo lappy?

Well in theory when a PC didnt damage in first 20 days of usage then it should run for the next 5 years usually for a desktop the the chance of failure for a pc can be graphiccaly expressed a a shape of "U " the left extention is the first 20( chance of failure) the right extention is after 5 to ???  years the in between is the 5 year span with no failures!!!!

The probability of a computer to survive first 20 days and have a failure in 5 years is equal to the probability of winning a lotery ticket!!

( there are rare exceptions)

howz it guys?

I can't say that I understand your question fully but I'll try to answer.

Modern hardware is designed to work for at least around 3-5 years.

CPUs designed to live 10 years, GPUs live around 7-10. Other silicon chips live from 5 to 10 years. If there're mechanic moving parts life is reduced to 3-5 years (HDD's, coolers, keyboards, DVD-ROMs). Bad power supply reduces all these lifetimes around twice. Good temperature mode can prolongue lifetime around 20-50%. Quality of parts also does matter.

For example. I repair laptops for some time. In my room there're 6 laptops now. One Lenovo G410 (Wanna reinstall Windows to my girl's laptop), one Toshba with Windows downgrade, one ASUS with spilled coffee and three ACERs - one with overheating and two with damaged HDDs - bad power supplies and bad screws work quality caused huge bad blocks areas.

Modern processors are capable to work at 100C, but problem is that smaller the laptop is, smaller the space is and HDDs are near processors. 100C is not good for anything else in laptop. Less it heats more the lifetime.

I bought an R40 Thinkpad in 2002.  It still runs great.  Friends of mine who Dells and Toshibas have had to replace theirs.  I got the Thinkpad because I knew it was a solidly built machine.  So, the answer to your question is that a laptop can last at least 6-7 years, maybe more depending on the brand and manufacturer.  Thinkpads, in my experience, last longer than most other brands.

Cargojack, I agree - as I said above, quality of components also have great influence.

I just don't know lifetime of LCDs. Most of 10-yeared LCDs are alive for now.

Tragedy of modern hardware is that it is morally old after 3 years.
