Looking to purchase Lenovo Y500

2013-04-10, 5:34 AM

I'm debating if I should pull the trigger on a Y500. Looking at:

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/builder.workflow:Enter?sb=:000001C9:00009E59:

The sale ends tom.

This is my first purchase directly from Lenovo.  I used to own Lenovos back in the day (T42), then switched to Dells.  Now looking to return to ibm.  I'm looking for a computer that can be used for some games and mainly for programming.  It's hard to find anything nowdays that is not 1366x768.  Although FHD seems a bit much for 15.6.  I currently am running at 1440x900 on a 14.1'' Dell Latitude.  I have a few questions for the group.

1.  Anyone have this laptop and find the FHD text too small to read?

2.  how often does Lenovo have deals on this laptop?  I really don't want to rush it.

3.  I already have a Samsung 830 2.5 7mm SSD. will this fit in the 1TB HDD slot?

4.  I typically run Ubuntu.  How does the Y500 support this linux distro?  Anyone run into major issues?

5.  I've read mixed answers on this.  Does it have optimus or not?

Thanks in advance,

-Sonny

Lenovo's deals really don't end, they just shift around slightly. In fact, the well after the sale on my Y500 ended, it was there for $50 cheaper -_-;

Do you think it will dip below 849.00 anytime soon?

Mine was $809+tax for same configuration, but that was with employee pricing plan for friends and then you need to add 12% tax.

Call Lenovo and try to negotiate over the phone. Call them a few times and get different sales people. Couldn't hurt. Either way, this is a great deal and you wont find a beast like this for under $1500 in any other brand.

This is an AMAZING value machine for the price. The 16:9 1080p screen is nice, a bit small for 15 inch as you said, and does take some getting used to coming from 16:10 (1440x900, 1280x800).

Optimus does *not* work, it is not a software fixable unlock, the hardware is not capable of it. This is to ensure the SLI runs properly as there seems to have been a conflict.

The SSD should work fine, and would be good, as the 5400rpm drive is the bottleneck for sure.

Ubuntu should work? I have not investigated too thoroughly, but there are many posts I've come across. If you're using Ubuntu, the Optimus switching doesn't work well anyways, as far as I've heard, so it's not a huge loss that it doesn't work here. I'm not sure, but there are other posts. Just Google for 'Ubuntu Y500' and there should be lots.

Dude you got an awesome deal on this laptop.  Yeah i agree, i shopped around a lot.  This is by far the best deal.  if you do a mix of gaming and space needing apps, then this is the best deal.  Esp. for software devs.  I've got a few hours today for the sale :).  it's at 849.00.  do they do price match if it goes down in a few days?

All told I paid $1100 (CDN) including the extra GT650m and the 170w adapter to run it.

I believe they match within 30 days? As I said, do call. $849 is really not unreasonable by any stretch though.

Just call their generic phone line, connect to sales department, let them know you want to order and if they can knock the price down any. Try a few times with different sales reps and calls if they don't.

You may not have any luck, but worth a shot.
