Re: New y510p sli card not detected

Is it possible that Lenovo updates the y510p BIOS itself to force the system to detect any alien ultrabay and makes the update of the VBIOS possible?

Re: New y510p sli card not detected

Hello Guys,

I bought Lenovo y510p with single card Nvidia GT750M in Uk and decide to get extra card GT750M5 from Us because Lenovo not selling here. So when I put card in laptop it didn't boot up at all, just black screen. I Did some researches and found BIOS for Lenovo 2.04,2.07 and 3.05. With 2.04 BIOS laptop is not showing nothing(black screen) on the screen until Windows loads up  and then in dxdiag I could see 4GB of video ram,  but nothing in Nvidia control panel mentioned about SLI mode. I decide to upgrade Bios to 2.07 and with this bios only black screen and PC in not booting at all if 2nd card inserted. Bios 3.05 you can see Lenovo boot logo, but after 5 second message appears on the screen saying  Unauthorized Slave VGA Card is plugged in - power off and remove it. Look like there is problem in BIOS and maybe Lenovo can fix this this way.

Don't bother, the card won't work no matter what you do. Lenovo is working on it so stay tuned.

They never made a y500 with a GT755m, that's why some of the y510p's have a GT750m, because they started putting the GT755m in the later series of the y510p.

All,

I know we are pusuing the vbios update as a potential solution - this is not confirmed yet as "the" fix, but we are actively working on it.    I am hopeful that we will have a status update later this week.

Thanks Varroa for keeping this issue on the boards - it isn't forgotten.

Best regards,

Mark

Re: New y510p sli card not detected

2014-05-13, 21:16 PM
I posted this on the wrong section so I am posting here.
Ok. I wish I had found this sooner. I am having a heck of a time with lenovo. I purchased the notebook around the time it came out. I used a cad cam program which require's a lot of graphical power and the sli of the y510p fit the bag. Problem was when I ordered was that it did not come with a dvd drive and the ultrabay. Weird but ok. They said that I can get the ultrabay later. Ok i can save my money and get it later becuase I will not need the sli for about 5 months until I use my program to start teaching.
Well, the time comes that I will need to start traveling and taking my program to show others how to use it. I call lenovo and talk to someone and ask what I need to get the SLI option going. He spends about 20 mins looking it up and says this is the one and that I will need the bigger power adapter. Ok great I order it. I havent even recieved it yet and my notebook suddenly does not recognize all my ram. ok weird. So i turn it off and reboot. Well now it wont turn on. Huh. so i take the ram out and put in one at a time and well come to find out. If i have one memory in the lower slot the computer works fine but populate the upper slot it doesnt work. So off the notebook goes to get repaired. Fine. It can happen.
So it comes back and I check it and it works. Ok. turn things off and pop in the video card, and get "Unauthorized Slave VGA card is plugged in. Power off and remove it" Oh boy I thought. I go and call lenovo again. They have me go through all the processes. I used to be a computer IT guy so I know what I'm doing. He's having me take the card out then go to windows and update the nvidia drivers. I know this is not going to work, but hey lets just entertain the idea b/c he's just following script. that doesnt work. Now he has me update to windows 8.1. I'm a little preturbed by this, and tell him this wont solve the issue. But he's insistant and I follow along. Windows 8.1 is not a merry 20 min install either. That was done and it still did not work. He looks into it more. As he is looking into it and I am too while he's researching something. i make a note that the graphics on my motherboard says gt750 and the card says gt755m5. He does more research and then comes to a conclusion that I was sold the wrong card. Great. Its not been 3.5 hours and my wife had to give the kids their baths and put to bed without me while i'm on the phone to come to this. They tell me they will exchange to the other card. Cant do that, they dont have any in stock. but tell me to go online and buy the new one and send back the old. Look online. the card cost 130 dollars more. Holy smokes batman (I didnt really say that) but I was thinking it. I told him how preturbed I was at it. now the call gets escalated to an upper guy. This guy looks into exchange as well and tells me I have to send mine in and buy this other part number on their site. 0C65964. So my 3 kids are now screaming from one waking up from a nightmare and my wife was downstairs feeding the baby. So I tell him I need to get this settled quickly. He was nice enough to say I'll take care of it all and send you and email with a UPS tracking number to send the unit out. And that was it.
Ok, so i send the other unit out and order the new one. It gets here. Guess what. SAME (explitive) issue. I call them and I am on support for an hour. Guess what. I'm going through the exact same thing again. check drivers, ect. I research and then find this thread and read it while i'm waiting. I read all 70 pages while waiting lol. Well she finally says that I will need to send the machine in for repair. I stay calm but almost go off my rocker. I told her to go to this forum and see what they have said here. I then say, that I think its going to be best if I get a replacement for my computer that has the SLI in it already. She doesnt want to do this at first and then I told her I need to speak to someone higher up. Well she puts me on hold. She says she's sent it to escalation department for review to get a replacement and will hear back in 3 buisness days. She said that its not hopeful this will be done since they are for repairs only. I told her thank you, and we hung up. I put my face to a pillow and screamed (as to not wake the kids), then signed up on here so I could post my rant. I just want what was promised to me when I ordered the first time. Just a sli computer.
~8 hours on support time lost from my family
cancel a training that was worth $2000. ARGH!
I wish I could return this computer and get the y50 b/c the performance seems to be on par with the y510p sli.

Sorry to hear about your problems friend. I went through everything you did and more before they sent me a new laptop. I think there are two issues going on here, the first is the defective cards and the second it the absolutely abismas customer service people that can't tell the difference between their heads and a donkey.

It seems Lenovo still cannot climb out of the vicious loop that without updating the VBIOS the graphic card is not detected but without detecting the graphic card the VBIOS cannot be updated. Not as easy as expected... I have been constantly waiting for updates. Just wanted to let Mark the Administer know.
