New y510p with a wifi problem

2013-06-28, 5:38 AM

Greetings,

Received my y510p in the mail today, but it fails to connect my router for more than a few minutes at a time. It still says it is connected, but I am unable to browse, download, etc. I have searched the forums as best I can (my internet keeps dying) for help.

Could anyone advise?

I tried, (1) disabling windows' ability to turn the card off to save power, (2) checked that my router uses wpa2 security, and (3) disabled 802.22n.

After fiddling around with my router, I found out that if I do not have wpa or wpa2 security on my router, my connection works well. It's not crazy fast, but it works consistently. At least, it has worked for more than a few minutes.

I think now the key is to figure how to connect to a secure router without dropping out every five minutes. Can anyone advise?

Additionally, enabling 802.11n mode seems to not matter. Even enabled I have a stable connection, WHEN I am not connected to a secure router.

Hi,

have you tried your connection on another device that can connect wirelessly? It might not be the card of the y510p.

If the other device works, then you might consider looking for a driver update for the wifi card.

If unable to do this, then call lenovo support and they will fix your issue.

I have used three other devices in various ways. All work with the router successfully. So it's the network card.

However, I uninstalled the driver---restarting the computer and let it update itself. So far the problem seems to be resolved. So it might have been a faulty driver or some error in the original driver's programming.

I will let you know if the problem is truly solved.

As a note, the driver previously was the most recent driver. So it just so happened that reinstalling it worked.

Unfortunately, that did not solve the problem. It allowed me to browse the internet, but when I try to do a live video stream or download something, my internet connection drops. Again, this is only when wpa2 is activated.

hi wagraham,

Can you try to:

1. Disable WiFi Multimedia (WMM) in your router settings and reboot then try to reconnect.

2. If you have a Linksys / Cisco router,  check this KB article from microsoft

3. Reboot in safe mode w/ networking and test the wifi. If all works ok, checked if you have a preinstalled trial version Mcafee and uninstall it then observe.

Best regards,

neokenchi

Will do. Would you please explain how to restart in safe mode. I migrated from a mac to a pc, so I am a little out of the loop.
