Nvidia graphics Card is not being detected by my lenovo z500

I have a Lenovo z500 ideapad laptop which has a Nivdia GT 635M graphics card and an Intel (R) HD graphics 4000. Currently running Windows 10  :smileyindifferent:


It had recently come to my attentoin that i was getting a significantly lower FPS when gaming. upon further investigation, i realised that the games were all running using the Intel graphics and not the Nvidia. I then realised that i was unable to open the Nvidia control panel.

I immediatley tried to find some solutions and as i had not updated the drivers in some time, i went to the Nvidia website to try and download the latest driver for my graphics card after i uninstalled the previous versions using DDU. and of course, the installation failed in the first step, displaying an error message saying ''The graphics driver could not find compatible hadware''. I also tried to install older versions of the driver (compatible with windows 10) but it still displays the same error message. Geforce Experience did not work and reinstallation of it failed.

    'Display adapters' in device manager only shows the Intel (R) HD graphics 4000 and does not show any signs of the nvidia graphics card. i have also read in other forums that people have found their drivers under 'other devices' but this does not appear for me in device manager. It's almost as if the Nvidia graphics card never existed!!!

   I finally visited the lenovo website to try and find the drivers here as i thought they may have been modified slightly for it to work on the laptops nvidia driver for Lenovo Z500 . However form what i saw, the latest drivers i could find only supports up to windows 8.1 and was released in 2013. What would happen if i tried to install this driver on my windows 10 device??


   I also found a video detailing how to edit the INF files to allow the computer to recognise the GPU but 1) im afraid of messing with those things and (2) My VEN ID was 8086 which he mentions in the comment that that ID would pose a problem when carrying this process out for reasons i dont know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKwFHU8ka5I


I am unsure of exactly when this problem arised and so i cannot use the restore points. However i do know that i never had this problem when running windows 8.1 and the graphics card ran perfectly. should i consider rolling back to windows 8.1?! (if its possible)


As of now, I'm stumped and wondering if i should factory reset my computer and pray something good happens.i only know the very basics about computers so this has me worried.

*EDIT* Tried to install the windows 8.1 driver from Lenovo; it extracted the files however the installation failed again, displaying the same error message as mentioned previously

Welcome to the Community Forums. 


Lenovo z500 listed computer models include hardware components not fully compatible with Windows 10. Therefore, upgrading these models to Windows 10 is not recommended. Particular configurations of a computer model may include hardware components not compatible with Windows 10. 


You can check the BIOS for Video configuration as default set as switchable . 

Device manager to show hidden devices for unknown device if Windows 10 detects the NVIDIA chip to attempt to either check from the specific manufacturer (NVIDIA) for a compatible driver or use the inbox Windows drivers. Using the OEM drivers for Win8 don't run after download instead run the driver on compatibility  mode.


If those drivers option fails , that may be the time to consider using the One Key Recovery (page 23) factory restore as it would delete files and applications and restores the machine back to the original WIndows as if from out of the box. Be sure you get your things backed up on a separate storage.
