P500 downgrade to Windows 7

2013-07-05, 13:33 PM

I am trying to downgrade my P500 from Windows 8 to Windows 7.

I tried pressing F1 after restarting my computer and nothing happens, I tried pressing F9 and all it does is switch on and off the display. (I even tried pressing "Fn" and F1 or F9)

I tried changing the boot order so that it would load from the dvd drive but it just gets stuck at a screen with just a "_" at the top left corner.

Please give me detailed instructions on how to do this thing. Please don't redirect me to another thread like this one:

 because I already tried it.

Thank you.

There isnt even a "interrupt normal startup message" so I can't even get to the second set of steps.

The F1 and F9 dont do anything at startup.

Re: P500 downgrade to Windows 7

I downgraded my P500 Touch to Windows 7 and now it will not boot. The Lenovo Splash screen comes up then a underscore cursor Then it goes back to the splash screen. It just keeps cycling like that. I Added linux to the system in a dual boot mode and linux boots fine but when I select Windows 7 the sytem immediately reboots. I can not find the issue. I have tried re-installing windows7 3 Times and it is the same every time.  Can anyone help help me figure this out. I followed the instruction in this thread with no luck.

Hi all,

thanks for posting. I was just wondering. Before installing the
Windows 7 on your system, did you change the the BIOS settings to legacy instead of leaving it to UEFI. If you have not done s, I would suggest you go into the BIOS settings > BOOT > set UEFI boot to disable.

Do let me know how it goes.

Regards

Re: P500 Windows 7 Downgrade

So far I'm really happy with this laptop. I needed windows 7 to run some software that isn't compatible with win8, so here are instructions on how I did that. Keep in mind that I just wiped the hard-drive and didn't keep the win8 recovery. Might bite me in the @55 later on, but it's ok

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Install clean Windows 7 on Lenovo Ideapad P500 with Windows 8

DRIVERS: Get Windows 7 drivers for P500 from here: http : / / support . lenovo . com / en_CA / downloads / detail . page ? DocID=DS032589

1. Download a Windows 7 ISO directly from MS or from the url in the next step (have a cd key ready for activation)
2. using Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool from http : / / helpdeskgeek . com / windows-7 / lost-windows-7-install-disc-create-a-new-one-from-scratch/ create a bootable USB stick with Win7 on it
3. in Win8, activate Legacy Boot: see http : / / www . pcmag . com / article2/0,2817,2417359,00 . asp
4. Restarting laptop with Win7usb starts the installation process
5. when you get to the hard-drive options, press SHIFT+F10 (hold Fn key to access F10) to access the command prompt
6. you end up in x:\resources but you want to be in x:\windows to access DISKPART to format the hard-drive
7. navigate to x:\windows and enter diskpart
8. for the P500 I did these steps to format the entire thing:
**** THE NEXT STEPS WIPE THE HARDDRIVE AND ALL THE PARTITIONS SO IF YOU PLAN TO RESTORE TO FACTORY SETTINGS, YOU MAY WANT TO CREATE AN IMAGE OF THE HARDDRIVE FIRST

diskpart
list disk
select disk 0
clean
convert mbr
exit

9. Go back to the Install windows part and click Refresh: only 1 partition exists now and you can install to it
10. continue installing as usual
11. Once in Windows, install all drivers from 2nd USB stick
12. Enjoy Windows 7 on P500!

Re: P500 Windows 7 Downgrade

2015-01-23, 0:19 AM

I've already downgraded the P500 from Windows 8 to Windows 7 64bit.  The problems I'm encountering now are:

a) cannot access BIOS

b) cannot install Wifi driver.

If anyone has information that can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

[edit]  Got the Wifi driver installed.  Still can't access BIOS to make changes; however may not be necessary until I need to "fix" this computer again for this particular user.

Thanks.
