Please help lenovo y500 crahed

2014-07-30, 18:37 PM

feel free to talk to me like i'm an idiot because i believe i may have bricked my y500. it has the 1tb hdd 16gb ssd 650m nvidia originally had win 8. about 6 months ago it crashed and i did a clean install of win 8.1(paid 60.00 -reason #1 im an idiot and you can speak to me as so). well its crashed again 2 nights ago and i've done everything i can like peeking around internet for solutions and talking to my brother who" knows computers" lawl(reason #2) and since then everything on my computer is deleted (yes all partitions) because thats what he told me. i'd love to ressurect my pc and reinstall win 8.1 on it (ive tried installing ubuntu but it just stays on the booting......startup screen forever and i dont know if i can self-educate enough to use ubuntu) if anybody can help me walk through the ressurection of my pc id sure appreciate it. i'm not going to spend hundreds taking it to the pc shop and having them do the work, id rather just buy a new macbook pro (but #1 i'd love to just keep my y500) if i can resurrect it i'll install an ssd where the hdd is and make the hdd an external and put something in the ultrabay and upgrade the (msata?) 16gb ssd. like i said explain this to me like i'm brand new to computers and walk me through it as best as you can, i'll remain attentive to updates on this thread, thanks much in advance!

Do you have a Win 8 DVD or installation USB. Do you have the Windows Key?

How did you get the Win 8.1 installed on your system for $60?

I don't have the installation disk and my usb drive isn't working windows won't mail me one and no shop around here will let me "borrow" a disk to install even though I have a product key. The only other computer I have available to me is a windows vista computer and it won't let me download 8.1 to even put It on a usb drive.

Sorry, I dont understand. You should be able to download a Win 8 installation ISO on any computer.

1. Download Win 8 installation ISO.

2. Create a UEFI Bootable USB drive or DVD. You can use the Windows USB/DVD tool to create it. (or just google it and you will see many methods to create it)

3. Insert that disk/drive in your Lenovo and boot it up.

4. You should see the Windows installation starting.

(If you dont see it then restart again and Press F2 repeatedly until you enter the BIOS, make sure USB boot is enabled if you are using USB drive and Secure Boot should be Disabled)

5. If the drive/DVD still doesnt work then you did not create it bootable. Try again and follow the steps.

6. Once Windows installation starts then follow instructions and install it. (You can try entering the Windows key, if it works then great otherwise just proceed without entering it)

7. Once windows is installed, go to Control Panel >> Windows Update and apply all updates.

8. Restart windows and Press F2 to go into BIOS, now make sure that Secure Boot is Enabled.

9. Select 'Exit Saving Changes' and laptop should restart. Go again to Control Panel >> System

10. Check if your Windows is activated. If its not activated then you can click on Activate windows and enter the key which you have to activate it.

Let me know if you have problems anywhere and we can troubleshoot it. (If you cannot create a bootable disk then I wont be able to help)

Where did you purchase Win 8.1?

How are you trying to create the ISO? Did you already download the ISO file?

How did you get this windows key? Is it a Retail version or an OEM?

You can download win 8.1 directly from Microsoft, but since you bought the pro version, make sure u download the pro. Just Google and you should get the link.
