Re: Y50 Big fan pulsating and clicking

Hi all

The clicking sound is fixed with the new BIOS update.

Thank you Amy for the news.

I think that the fix for the clicking sound, is just avoiding the values in the temperature table when the clicking noise was occurring, so by updating the controller program to do that, the fan speed had to be increased. This is the reason for the increased fan speed.

So this is how it looks like, because the laptop, besides the clicking noise, was quieter.

I would be happier with fixing the clicking for that particular speed of the fan.

So do you like the fix? Because It feels like a workaround more than a fix.

Feel free to argue with these facts and I am thanking the engineers for the work done so far.

Personally, I like it better now, but hoping for a quieter laptop.

RomulusDaniel I totally agree with you. As said earlier, "bad" fan noise is still with laptop. Tree or less times you can hear it when laptop boots up (mine is with WIN7 64bit).

killlerman said, this is normal start operation of the fan. But something can be done to change it? It feels like it is 0% when off, and in a moment 100%. Can turning on be more smoother? My opinion this noise prodused by fan kicking in really fast.

How do I update BIOS under Linux (ubuntu) ? The support page contains only Windows files? Any guide?

@orkon: just a (not so nice) idea for a workaround: you could use a windows live usb boot stick... i think this can be done without registering the windows (there is a trail periode or s.th. like that)... but i agree with you, that a linux version of the fix should be available...

@meshqis: my y50 makes the sount about one or two times when booting... I think this is ok, as it is not annoying and it is the normal behaviour of the fan - so it does not have any negative influence on the lifetime of the fan...

@best87 OK, i will say in other words. For me, is the first computer to act like this. Notebook, or stationar PC. First time i hear this cind of starting noise.

For me is like when you start car and go fot full gas instantly (but you are standing). Can you start car and go smooth to full gas? Can this fan be started smooth?

There is two fans. Why other one does not make such klicking noise when starting?

Well after bios update the clicking noise is gone but for some reason it cannot go down with temperature under 50C degree so the fun is quite noisy right now. I noticed also that I cannot turn off nvidia graphic in BIOS i.e. the option is still there but seems to be not working because under OS nvidia is still present (I tried to turn off it to check if tempreture is lower). So looks like this fix is just some poor workaround.

Does anyone have the same problems?

Btw. I'm using linux.

EDIT: I was wrong with this not working turning off the nvidia card in bios. Looks it works. Nvidia software shows the card but there's nothing about it in system logs so it's not an issue I guess.

Anyway the temperature is constantly  above 50C so the laptop is quite noisy now.

Does anyone have the same under linux?

How it looks like under Windows?

Did you use Windows to update? I am looking for the way to update BIOS on Linux?

For me the only working way to install it (without installing windows itself) was to use windows live usb, truly speaking with it also was a problem, no usb detected, no network drivers :/ but finally usb appeared (I have no idea how, I just tried different settings, restarting couple times <being already in desperation>....and, at some point, finally usb was visible so I could update the bios). Before this I tried also a bootable windows system recovery usb but I wasn't able to execute the binary with bios.
