[SOLUTION] Windows 8.1 SLI fix for Y500/Y510p

2013-10-08, 11:48 AM

If you are reading this you are probably wondering on how to get SLI working on Windows 8.1 with your Lenovo IdeaPad Y-series.

In a few weeks everyone here will get the option to upgrade and all hell will break loose.

Note that this is not Lenovo's fault. There is a bug in the UEFI firmware. You can as a workaround boot in legacy mode, or you can downgrade to the driver below:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/win8-win7-winvista-64bit-320.49-whql-driver.html

Bookmark this solution in case this problem still exists by the official Windows 8.1 release.

Thanks for the suggestion! Actually, downgrading to this driver appears to be unsuccessful - while SLI is now an option in the NV control panel, activating it does not work.  I have Windows 8.0 and 8.1 installations for comparison - performance in Windows 8.0 is huge compared to SLI in 8.1 with the downgraded driver.

This solution did not work on my Lenovo y510p SLI. I downgraded to 311.41 which is the default version on the drivers disk that came up with my laptop. Also as a suggestion while installing the older version is to:

1/ Stop your wifi or remove the lan cable.

2/ Stop the windows automatic updates and set it to select manually what to install. (because windows also detects that there are new drivers available and attempts to update them).

3/ Once drivers are installed stop the automatic update and update notifications.

4/ Connect to the internet and enjoy your life! :-)

Best regards,

I got it working!

I had the same expierence as you. 320.49 enabled me to see the SLI options again in the Nvidia Control Panel, but the second card was clearly not used.

Then, I rebooted the computer (to enable Secure Boot and UEFI boot in BIOS - my guess this is unrelated).

After the reboot I started the Nvidia Control Panel again and clicked "Set SLI and PhysX Configuration", where the program told me that the SLI hardware had changed. I clicked OK, the software asked me to exit some applications before it would continue its work, and lo and behold, SLI started working again. Alas, I'm not exactly sure what I did, but I have my old FPS values back again and the right-hand side fan is working.

Just checking. If it is a bug in the UEFI firmware, then clearly Lenovo is responsible for fixing it, right? But I don't think the UEFI firmware is at fault since downgrading the driver fixed it for me.

It is not a bug in the UEFI firmware. WIndow 8.1 require a VBIOS according to nvidia to register the 2nd graphic card. And the VBIOS can only be release by Lenovo. Lenovo already know this issues since window 8.1 preview but they tend to ignore it and does not provide a fix for this ! I'm also a Y510p user and i really hope lenovo release the new VBIOS. All we can do now is to wait for the VBIOS from lenovo or downgrade to WIndow 8.0. (IMO lenovo won't care since y510p model already sold out, dissapointed with Lenovo). Downgrading the Nvidia driver only allow you to enable SLI but it is actually not working for many games ! This is not a fix !

Regardless of if they're sold out or not, Lenovo is supporting Windows 8.1 on these models which includes completely functional SLI.  This should be a short-term bump in the road after an initial adoption of a sizeable OS upgrade.  Some communication from Lenovo would be fantastic! *hint hint*

I updated my nvidia driver from Lenovo's site which is 311.27 it fixed SLI but now I cannot open any game and my pc crashes whenever I open a game. All Y500 owners have this issue I think and Lenovo has to find a solution IMMEDIATELY !

This is NOT a solution at all, this weakens the resolve of people that want to have an up to date SLI experience to take advantage of Nvidia's newest drivers on the newest OS.
