first of all BIOS is not stored in HDD if thats what you thought it did, just saying since BIOS is in a seperated BIOS chip on the motherboard so yeah if F2 or bios setup methods wont work then try what OKR-MAN said above :)

Tried unplugging the battery and holding down the start button but it still will not enter BIOS.

Do you have One Key Recover button  apply same 30 seconds procedure that button as well ! Let us see bios wakes up !

if you do a bios update and it fails then laptop will not even start anymore since no bios functioning means no working laptop ;) so i doubt that is issue.

One more thing remove the battery , just plug the cable and see if you can access BIOS  like this !

Ok I think the problem is  you are trying to access bios using keyboard which is wrong , in Z580 you can access bios using ONE KEY RECOVERY BUTTON which known as NOVO BUTTON 

 

NOVO BUTTON : When the computer is off, press this button to start the  Lenovo Recovery system or the BIOS setup utility, or to  enter the boot menu.

he noted he already tried todo that but novo button just continues booting OS or w.e but it wont load bios when picking Bios Setup after novo button.
