Upgrading RAM in Y500 (mixed size)

2013-04-15, 15:06 PM

I already have a 8GB stick that i ordered from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0089JIDUI/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I have not recieved my Y500 yet.  I'm assuming it will come with 2X4gb sticks.  Is it worth it to replace one of those sticks with the 8gb stick (making it 12gb total)?  Is there only two slots in the y500?  Any issues with mixing sizes like this?  all are 1600

Thanks in advance.

The only issue that will come with mixing RAM sizes is that you don't get it in dual channel mode.

Best to just get 2 8gb sticks and be done with it, as the max for this machine is 16gb anyways.

OK.     I can try to sell it or just keep it around until I chose to go buy another 8gb.  I have no plans to spend more money on this.  I guess my question is.  should i put in the 8gb or should i just leave it as it is.  which configuration will perform better?  I plan to use this for some games, dev, and some VMs.  Thanks

Hmm, well I'd compare to how much RAM you use in your current system. 8GB is quite a bit, 12 may be overkill for most situations when your 5400RPM harddrive is the bottleneck. If you really want to see a speed increase, pop and SSD into it.

Yep. I've got an SSD that I will install as well (Samsung 830 - 256GB). I'm just torn as to if i should return the 8gb stick, or keep it for the future. It really doesn't make sense for it to just sit there since it will come down in the future. And buying 2X8 will be cheaper in a year or so. If i choose to keep it, i might as well put it in...?
