Re: Wireless Display (WIDI) issue on ideapad Y500

2013-01-13, 18:27 PM

hello everyone.

I have had my y500 for about 3 weeks now, I needed a computer for work and travel, and I wanted a powerful one so I got this at a pretty decent discount, when I contacted lenovo support they said that some models feature optimus but  not the ones that are sold in USA, while other models have optimus and pre enabled intel HD4000, as evident you will find link where you can download the driver for intel HD4000 from lenovo drivers and downloads in lenovo support, I guess the only difference is the bios version prehaps or models outside usa that doesn`t support SLI, am not sure yet but I would sacrifice optimus for SLI in a hearbeat but it would be pretty sweet to have th HD4000 for power efficiency on the go.

Hi Eaglespeed,

That explains a lot. Too bad they were not clear about it in their description in the Lenovo store and (most technicians)

were uninformed of this at technical support.

Re: Wireless Display (WIDI) issue on ideapad Y500

hi,

i´ve bought y500 from czech distribution and can confirm that it does NOT have HD4000 active, so its probably not specific only to US sold models. Strangely enough datasheet from czech lenovo specifically mentions support of Optimus and Widi - http://www.lenovo.cz/download/datasheets/cz/files/Y500_CZ.pdf , translated roughly as:

Up to 2x Dedicated graphic card NVIDIA® GeForce® 2GB GDDR5 (1570MHz) in SLI mode with NVIDIA® Optimus™ technology.

Enjoy the picture on the big screen thanks to wireless technology Intel ® Wireless Display (WiDi).

On the other hand, i´ve found this - Is Optimus supported with SLI? though it seems to be a bit outdated.

It would be nice to have Optimus (or at leas option to chose between SLI and optimus), but its not a dealbraker for me. I really like the performance especially when both cards are overclocked (1110/2500), gives me nice P4400 in 3D mark 11 while temperature does not go above 60C.

I agree. I just wish we would get an answer. I just PM'd one of the techs again, but they never respond to my private messages. Somebody at Lenovo has to have an answer and it is so frustrating that they have not responded to us. I need to know whether or not I should be returning this machine. If there is a solution, I would like to keep it. Once it is fully configured as advertised, it could be a great machine.

Re: Wireless Display (WIDI) issue on ideapad Y500

Called customer support today since I didn't hear from them within 3 days like post-sales said they would do.  They gave me an RMA for a full refund (without me asking) even though I purchased it more than 21 days ago.  I am starting to have touchpad issues like some others are having (another forum).  Unfortunately it seems like they rushed this Y500 to market way too soon- too many big issues with it.

For those of you who are considering a return, they do send you a UPS label so you don't have to pay return postage... I presume.  I will be packing it up in the next few days and sending it back.  Now I have to find something to replace this...

Has anyone received any news on this subject?

Will the Widi ever work? Will the HD4000 be enabled in a bios update? Will they let us choose a bios update that disables SLI and enables Optimus?

I would like to get any news concerning this.

Mark_lenovo, Nine? Any news regarding this issue?

I discused this issue with a lawyer, and they suggested that this is "breach of contract" as it is stated as features of the laptop however they did not deliver on it.

I was the first person who started this blog. I have Y500 with no WIDI and touchpad and keyboard not working!!!!!!!!!!

I am waiting for my Y500 replacement over 4 weeks now. I receive email with return label (after two additional calls to post sales) but Lenovo did not ship my new laptop yet, neither that they give me any time frame for shipment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really have enough of this! Reading other comments, I don't think that new Y500 will come with WIDI working. I think, I will stop the new laptop shipment and ask for the refund!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will also make sure that I will tell my story to everyone and any site possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did get a PM from NINE. He says that he has "spoken to respective teams" regarding this problem and is awaiting a reply. He will let us know as soon as he hears something.

In the meantime I am looking for alternative technology options to WiDi and there are a few. Am waiting to hear if there is anything new from CES 2013.

piotrmich, your best bet might be to order a replacement system like the y580, see what kind of additional discount they will give you and return the defective y500. i really think there are too many issues with the y500 and it would seem the y580 has some of the "dealbreakers" such as WiDi, optimus enabled graphics, a reliable touchpad and no keyboard issues that i've seen anyone comment about. i did get sales to do most of my original discount, less $50, and on the y580 i will have a Blue Ray instead of DVD player. granted no Ultrabay, but i didn't really care about that feature. i'm going to give the y580 a chance based on many positive reviews and lack of major concerns. my theory is that you really can't find that kind of power for under $1500 on most other brands.

sounds like you've had a rough time of it.. that sucks
