Re: Wireless Display (WIDI) issue on ideapad Y500

2012-12-18, 6:31 AM

So just for laughs, here's the log from my failed WiDi installation. Does it look to you like maybe it's the video driver? Should the fact that they can't spell compatible make me nervous? :)

Re: Wireless Display (WIDI) issue on ideapad Y500

2012-12-19, 6:17 AM

I cannot get a straight answer out of anyone at Lenovo Support or in post-sales. This is a problem MULTIPLE users are having.

I recently purchased an Ideapad Y500 after a great deal of research. One of the features I wanted was Intel Wireless Display (WiDi). I verified with sales that this came standard with my machine (as it says both on the Lenovo site as well as in sales materials.) My machine came with Windows 8 installed, but no WiDi. When i try to install the WiDi drivers, the install stops and says that I do not have a compatible platform. Checking the install log file,, it appears that the video drivers are not compatible. I have an NVIDIA GeForce 650M and have tried installing WiDi with the shipped driver and a more recent driver I installed from the NVIDIA site plus an updated driver from the Lenovo support site. None worked.

Tech support said I should call post-sales and ask them to ship me a new machine with WiDi correctly configured. But, when i called, I couldn't get confirmation from the post-sales agent that the new machine would have WiDi correctly installed. All he said he could do was send me an identically configured replacement or refund my money. He could not verify for me that WiDi is standard on the Y500. He wouldn't even admit that he didn't know what WiDi is (he thought it was a wireless keyboard.)

I need to know definitively if WiDi is indeed standard on this machine and if it is, how to configure it properly myself or verify 100% that the new machine will come correctly configured.

This is ridiculous, horrible customer service. I want answers. if you are having the same problem, please comment on this thread so maybe we can get a response from somebody at Lenovo who actually understands the problem.

PS I will be more than happy to roll back to Windows 7 if that's what it'll take.

Re: Wireless Display (WIDI) issue on ideapad Y500

2012-12-19, 22:59 PM

I installed the Windows 8 updates, restarted, couldn't install NVidia drivers since the Nvidia website said that they must be downloaded from Lenovo, and there were no video card drivers on my D drive.  Only Intel wireless card.  Just for kicks I installed it but like everything else it made no difference.  Exact same issue as the others.

I sent a message to my "sales advisor" (when I first ordered the machine) but like everything else with Lenovo customer support I received nothing in reply.  I told them I want an equivalent Y580 but of course they are backordered >4 weeks.  Did anyone try the online support request?

Can someone give me the post-sales number?  is it the same number as tech support?  Don't want to waste another minute trying to fix this- or installing more software- unless there is going to be a BIOS update we can install ourselves.

ANOTHER UPDATE! Re: Wireless Display (WIDI) issue on ideapad Y500

2012-12-20, 4:24 AM

I spent close to two hours with premium tech support.

1) Spoke to software for awhile and the tech insisted that the problem was the NVIDIA graphics card, which he said was not compatible with WiDi. I asked him if he could point me to the documentation that stated this, and he said that they know this based on their experience with users. I pointed out that the GeForce card is the only one that comes with the Y500 and he said it had to have an Intel graphics card. I tried to explain that the Y500 also comes with the Intel integrated graphics (HD4000) that's part of the processor. He said my only option was to return the laptop for a refund. He did, however, give me the number for their hardware dept.

2) I called the hardware dept and that tech said that just tonight he had successfully configured a Y500 with Windows 8 for WiDi. He connected remotely to my computer and said the problem is that the system is not detecting the integrated graphics properly, and he believes it's faulty hardware. He issued me a case number and said that when I speak to post-sales I should specifically request that the new laptop is configured with the Intel integrated graphics, which should show up in the device manager. He issued me a case number.

I am hopeful this will resolve the problem! I am happy because I finally got confirmation from a tech that the Y500 should come with WiDi configured...  Will keep you all posted!

J.

I bet we need a BIOS update. From what I have read on other systems we should be able to enable integrated graphics on the BIOS level but that option is not present. That would explain why windows 8 cant load the HD drivers, and in turn why the widi install fails because it cannot find the compatible video driver.

Re: Wireless Display (WIDI) issue on ideapad Y500

2012-12-21, 0:53 AM

Finally, it sounds like a bit of good news from the tech support side.  I haven't called post-sales yet but hope to have time tomorrow.  I really hope I don't have to go through 15 different people to find someone who knows what they are doing.  Also, I really wish there was a way to update the BIOS from our side instead of getting a new PC and re-installing all of the software and files that I have installed/transferred to the new laptop.  But if getting a new laptop is what it takes, that is better than not having functional HD Graphics / WIDI.

Piotrmich, are you going to receive your new laptop then send back the original, or are they requiring you to send them the original first?  I am assuming the first but you never know.  Thanks.
