Mark,

Here's where I saw WIDI support in the marketing material:  Also show in red below.  When you click on the Intel Wireless Dsiplay link it talks about WIDI.

Also when you compare Y models, it says widi is standard on all models -- http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=C46D71ACFD7C4475B8E490358F8CA8C3&tabname=Compare

Mark, I am not sure who you are but if you a Lenovo representative and you don't know the products that your company makes that does not look good! You are asking us to teach you how the product should work!

Here are the links:

The first link is to Lenovo site and it states that WIDI is a standard on all models of Y500!!!

http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/ideapad/y-series/

The second link is to Lenovo site and shows that Y500 has INTEGRATED Intel HD Graphics 4000, which does not show up in device manager!!!

http://www.lenovo.com/psref/pdf/ipbook.pdf

What else are you looking for!!!

The level of my frustration is growning every minute with Lenovo technical support, post-sales and you!!!

Since 12/19 I am waiting on my Y500 replacement and only today 1/8, I finally received the message that the laptop will be sent to me!!! I still don't know if it is going to work as advertised! Besides the issue with WIDI I also had touchpad and keyboard problems!!!

Thanks everyone for the updates, I see I am not alone!!!

EvanB,

I've already checked my device manager, and I don't have an Intel Wireless adapter.

For a wireless adapter, I've got a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485WB-EG listed, and my wired is a Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

So probably no WIDI for me (since you need to have an Intel Wireless adapter to be able to use WIDI)

Mark

On the psref page it lists the hd 4000 on the processor section. Which makes sense since it is integrated into the i7 chipset. Appreciate you looking into this. I was getting aggravated working with tech support and post sales

Mark_Lenovo,

You're right in saying that there isn't any mention on the HD4000 or Optimus on the Lenovo site, but it clearly states that WIDI is standard available on all Y500 models.
And since WIDI will not work without an Intel HD4000 (and an Intel Wireless adapter, which I also don't seem to have), I was just expecting to be able to switch between the HD4000 and the Nvidia graphics. Be it with switchable graphics or Optimus technology.

Mark,

I too am having WiDi issues.  A brand new Y500 with Intel Centrino Wireless-N 2230 and Nvidia adapter and NO Widi.  I too purchased this laptop with Widi as one of my requirements.  I spent well over 2 hours a week or so ago on the telephone with hardware support (I can supply the ticket number if required) and I was finally told flat out by the Tech I was dealing with that his supervisor advised him to advise me that my Y500 did not support WidDi and the ticket was closed!

So yes, I too am very disappointed with Lenovo and hope this Widi issue is soon resolved.

David

Hi,

It is easy done change the Qualcomm for Intel.

The question is... will it work.

Hi Mark,

Also, the HD4000 is standard in the i7-3630QM and 3632QM processor (see Intel's page: http://ark.intel.com/products/71670/Intel-Core-i7-3632QM-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_20-GHz-BGA). If you have one of those two processors (which all Y500s do), then you have an HD 4000.

Optimus technology is part of the design of the NVIDIA Geforce GT 650M: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-650m. If you have an NVIDIA Geforce GT 650M (and all Y500s do), then you've got Optimus technology.

The Y500 has all the necessary HARDWARE for WiDi. I am thinking that it is the fact the HD4000 is not enabled on the BIOS level that we cannot install WiDi.

Thank you again for your attention to this matter. I really want to get this matter settled as soon as possible!

J.

Re: Wireless Display (WIDI) issue on ideapad Y500

i too read more than just the standard summary of specs on the model listing page. always read the detailed specs, so i perused the ipbook.pdf document. i researched the Nvidia card and found it has optimus technology, saw that the processor has intel HD 4000 built in, saw WiDi and thought ok, seems like a really good deal. the ipbook.pdf gave me more information than anything and that was a PRIMARY reason in buying the system.

someone on the touchpad thread pointed out that just by the SLI design that the HD 4000 HAS to be disabled because it can't be enabled on an SLI system. if that's true, i sure didn't know it. i wouldn't have assumed that a system wouldn't be built that wouldn't take full advantage of the processor and the video optimus technology.

and believe me, i scoured the internet for detailed specs before buying the sytem, which is why i thought it was the most bang for the buck. comparable Alienware systems with only 14" screens and lesser HD sell for $1500. they do tout the optimus capability. i didn't go with the AW system because of heat issue and screen quality..

from everything i read, it would seem that because the y500 has SLI that we are forced NOT to have the Intel HD 4000 at all because SLI and the Intel HD are incompatible. i wonder if there is a way where those of us who do not want to take advantage of SLI can enable the Intel 4000 or are we just stuck with a system that is not changeable in that respect?

i would love to have the option of better battery life and WiDi. they're not absolute dealbreakers, but the issue i have on the touchpad thread definitely are, esp if the keyboard keeps doing funky things
