Y40 Screen Flickering Problem

2015-08-03, 3:32 AM

Hello, I have had my Y40 for 8 months and no big issues. However when my laptop is running off battery, it flickers like crazy. This problem started off with a few intermittent flickers but as time went on it got worse. However, when it is plugged in to power, there is no flickering. Also when it is plugged into an external monitor, there is no flickering (even while running on battery). And when it is plugged into power and the external monitor, there is no flickering.

I have googled around and tried disabling Display Power Saving, adaptive brightness, and I tried updating the BIOS. Nothing has fixed the problem. Should I send it in?

Solution for Y40 (-70) screen flicker

2015-08-02, 15:38 PM

Has anyone found a solution to the screen flickering on a Y40-70 when on battery power?

To attempt to fix, I:

- Changed power settings to maximum performance.

- Changed power setting in Intel HD Graphics panel to disable

- Ensured all drivers were updated

- Updated bios

- Rolled back intel display driver

- Re-installed current intel display driver

Thoughts...before I send it back to Lenovo?

Update:

I tried turning off adaptive brightness again and that seemed to have fixed the problem. But maybe it was just because my battery was greater than 60%? Not sure.

DerrickOR, has anyone replied with an answer to your issue. I'm having it too. If I keep my laptop plugged in all the time (too long) I get e-chided by my laptop telling me I need to change my power saver setting s though t it doesn't provide in detail how I should do this. Then when I unplug it to let the battery deplete, my screen flickers...as it is right now...does anyone at all have an answer for this? Does Lenovo read these KB topics/questions? I'm sure it's a simple fix or worse case we have faulty monitors. let me know if you hear anything before I go into an epileptic trance :)

Hi,

Unfortunately no, I have not fixed the problem. You're probably getting that prompt because you don't have the setting where the laptop stops charging once it hits 60%. To access this, search "Energy Manager" and turn on "Conservation Mode". However, this has nothing to do with our flickering problem.

I also did a factory reset and that did not solve the issue. I gave in and just sent it in for repair as it is still under warranty. I will come and reply to this thread after I receive my laptop back to see if the issue is fixed.

Even though I have a Y50, Y40 and Y50 are similar in laptop structure. Please look into my solution as a possibility.

I had the same issue and tried every possible solution I could find online, including disconnecting and reconnecting the display connector after removing the LCD framing. I ended up sending the laptop into Lenovo and just received it back (it took about 1 week to repair). The LCD no longer flickers when i'm on battery and they cleaned the laptop. I recommend just sending your laptop in for repair.

Linerax's solution didn't work for me. Your best bet is to send the laptop into Lenovo for repair. It's a hardware issue, and they fixed it within one week for me... https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Solution-for-Y40-70-screen-flicker/td-p/2134074

I had to send mine back in, and wait 2-3 weeks, for them to get/replace new screen.

I actually did a windows 10 update which fixed my issues, now a month later the issue has arisen again, this makes me think it is a software issue?
