Y50: 6.42 GB Usable of (8.00 GB

2015-12-07, 16:13 PM

I've Lenovo Y50 960m version (8GB).

I can only use 6.42 GB of the 8 GB!

Resource Monitor says that 1614MB are reserved!

How to fix that please?

I heared about GFX card being using that reserved memory, but I don't believe this is the case! It's 960m 4GB

why would it reserve more memory? and if so, how to reduce this amount of reserved memory?

Thanks

hi AhmadLight,

The Y50 uses switchable graphics to toggle between the Intel (iGPU) for power saving and the discrete Nvidia GTX 960M maximum performance.

I don't have a Y50 unit here for testing but I suspect that the 1614MB RAM is being allocated to the Intel Graphics (you can verify this via dxdiag or by navigating to the Desktop (right click --> choose Screen.Resolution) --> Advanced Settings.

 - Sample image

As for reducing the amount of memory, you can only do this if the hardware configuration and BIOS settings supports it.

 - Sample image

it the setting to adjust graphics memory isn't applicable, check this article on how to remove the reserved memory (requires a restart).

Alternatively, you can always upgrade to 16GB RAM to eliminate this hiccup especially if you run multiple apps that eat alot of RAM (e.g., Virtual Machines)

Let me know if this works for you.

Regards

Thanks for your reply. This is the case:

Does that mean surely that my second gfx card is reserving this amount of RAM?

Also, I don't have that option in BIOS, and I want to ask if the second method you've mentioned is safe.

Wouldn't that cause any type of instability?

Thanks

hi,

The screenshot that you posted means that the hardware reserved RAM is being eaten by the Intel HD Graphics 4600. You can check if the Nvidia uses this reserved memory too under the Nvidia Control Panel.

  - Sample Image

Seing that you have 0MB of Dedicated Video Memory on the Intel HD Graphics 4600, trying out the method on how to remove the reserved memory may not work as planned as Windows will reallocate it again upon reboot (it should be safe to try it but may not take any effect after restart).

Additional information that might interest you:

You can try to set all programs to use the Nvidia GPU but if the system is designed to allocate memory on the Intel HD Graphics 4600 then I'm afraid this can't be changed unless future BIOS update for this model allows modification of this feature.

I'm sorry, but which field/detail in the posted screenshot tells the amount of RAM being reserved for the Intel 4600 Card?

And this is the Nvidia details:

hi,

When a Windows app that utilizes GPU runs, the Dedicated Video Memory is utilized first before it uses the Shared System Memory.

In the case of the Y50 which utilizes Switchable Graphics (Optimus Technology), the Intel HD Graphics 4600 is utilized first but it doesn't have a Dedicated Video Memory, thus, it gets it from the Shared System Memory (which is the hardware reserved RAM) -- this explains why you see the 6.42 GB Usable of (8.00 GB) under the System Properties.

As for the Nvidia GPU, it's shown that it has a Dedicated Video memory of 4096MB so it almost never use the 3289MB Shared System Memory (you can verify this by using tools like GPU Shark).

Well, I've solved the problem. I had to just uncheck the "Maximum memory" in MSCONFIG options.

Maximum memory is unchecked by default so why is it checked?

I don't remember exactly, but I think I had seen a webpage containing ways to optimize your startup by selecting number of processors and selecting the max memory availabe.

Anyway, unchecking it did the trick.
