Re: Y50 70 BIOS Can't Save Settings Or Exit

Please don not spread false information. It is no Ubuntu 17.10 issue. I never had Ubuntu but Antergos and the same happen to me. This is hardware failure of the NVRAM - too many writes, caused by how Linux/systemd (my guess) is handling any Kernel related change.

The real fix has been mentioned here - replacing the NVRAM and copying the old ones content to it.

Wayaround - my solution with rEFInd.

If someone figured out how to flash our bios from USB, please tell how here. Guess it's the only working solution if it even exists.

It is not possible to flash BIOS anymore.

NVRAM of our laptops had reached max writes count and is NVROM from now on. Full stop.

Only way to change it is to replace the chip by resoldering the MB.

End of story.

Lenovo support (Germany) has no clue about the issue. Only feedback I got was to send my laptop for check-up. Which I'm not going to do as I still have pretty functional system.

Is there a rfeind workaround possible with Windows? My Secure boot got enabled for some reason and now the BIOS seetings won't change, so I can only boot into Windows, that too by pressing F12 at boot time and going in to boot menu

I think it could be made to create a new set of partitions with the first one having rEFInd on it and allowing to boot into Windows/USB/Linux etc. on a choice.
BUT
I don't have Windows nor need of having it therefore someone else has to create this workaround.
My take would be:
Take another disc
Create a small, 100MB partition for rEFInd
Clone the ID from the original disc's partition
rename the rEFInd boot loader file to the one booting Windows
Insert that drive to your laptop, connect an USB/CD drive with Windows and start computer - it should boot the rEFInd, detect the USB/CD and let you install Windows on the remaining area of hard drive (important not to erase the rEFInd partition). Then reboot and rEFInd shall detect the new system easily.
Good luck!
